How about this for a weird one?
Three months ago, my mother sent her license back to get a change of address done. No problem, it all went smoothly.
Two months later she is driving on unfamiliar roads and cruises passed a camera at a few miles over. FPN duly arrives, mum accepts it, pays and then sends licence off.
Today, they send the license back saying it is not valid as their records show they have issued a more recent one!
She looks at the address on the licence they have sent out and it is her OLD license with her previous address on that she sent back to them three months ago!
Being a bit elderly she is completely confused and was sure she had already applied for a license with the new address on but was now starting to doubt herself.
After getting through to them on the phone and explaining/querying what the hell was going on, she is put on hold and then the agent came back she said "I have your latest license in my hand, we sent you the wrong one back."
So, I understand that people make mistakes etc etc, but my question is, why do they keep the old licenses at all? don't voided licences get destroyed so they don't get into the wrong hands and/or to avoid stuff like this happening?

Out of interest, why do DVLA require the licence to be posted back to them at all?
Points & endorsements are no longer written on the licence itself (unlike to old paper versions), so what do they actually do with the photocard when they receive it in the post?

If I said I was you & gave your details as the driver saying I was guilty of the alleged offence, I'd also need to physically have possession of your most recent licence to send in order have the points added to the record.

You’ve taken a binary situation of licence or license and made a third option, that being to alternate between the two. I have problems with the spelling of certain words, In my defence (defense?)I did live in the states for a while..Bizarre and concurrently impressive
defiantly and definitely are my big problem words ..spell check works on those too though (sic)

I have just recently renewed my licence and on receipt of the new one they ask you to send the old one cut in half ...... there is no reason they would retain the old so I would surmise that perhaps your mother inadvertently sent back the new one by mistake which they then destroyed.

Nope, they are sending the new one back out, they had both. And she was supposed to send back the new one, she already sent the old one back three months ago before she got the new one sent out to her.Forums | Speed, Plod & the Law | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
