Received a letter though the post this morning stating I was driving on a road at a set time. I was and driving towards a police van so presume that was it.

What should I expect?

TIA

I had this once from a member of the public report.
Basically overtook someone on a filter lane which normally isn't an issue but the council were getting ready to surface dress and had just dumped a load of gravel in this lane which you couldn't see until you came round the corner. Had the back end step out which I corrected.
Had a letter through about a week later asking for me to give details, I basically said the same as above and then afterwards had a letter saying no further action will be taken.

May be different if its a police vehicle that has reported you. What are they saying you did?

They haven’t been specific.

I would ask for things like video or picture evidence to support what charges you are being accused of.

Were you being a wally? :-)

If it's not a NIP and it's not specific just ignore it.

Not overly no, it is a twisty road, I came around the corner he was coming towards me. I have sent off the declaration I was the driver.

I had to sign a declaration I was the driver and reply within 28 days, so no option.

Shocking advice, do not do this OP, I would think all you have received so far is a S172 form asking for drivers details, that is all you need to do at the moment, the details of the alleged offence at this time are immaterial. If you ignore it as LordBret says you will find yourself facing 6 points and a large fine.

Edit just seen the OP has returned the form

My recent NIP I’m sure said I’d be off to court if I didn’t respond, so yeah I’d respond.

Got a Zoom speed awareness course on Monday, can’t wait to be lectured for 2 and a half hours from the comfort of my own sofa, all for the bargain price of £95.

The irony

They can be a little educational (I'd never thought about stopped distance and how (roughly) doing 70 not 50 meant you were still doing 50 at the point you'd have stopped if you had been doing 50) but probably more significantly you get to meet people you share the roads with and it can be frightening

But to pass the time, do a bingo card of phrases you think you'll hear

I’d happily do a Speed Awareness course whatever the outcome as I could do with brushing up on the theory side, whilst I’ve had advanced training that was 20 years ago now so bound to learn something one would hope.

Well there's always chance to learn something (I did), don't anticipate a huge amount of new learning!

I literally did my first speed awareness course for my first offense in 15 years of driving a couple of weeks ago.

It was on a motorway so I got a motorway education course. (I was done at 4 in the morning for doing 50 through a Gantry displaying 40).

I learnt nothing I'm afraid to say. I'm obviously a car enthusiast being on this site and I know the rules of the road and things involving common sense.

I did go in with a completely open mind, thought well a refresher might help , maybe some things I've forgotten or could learn, the guy running the course was OK, but we got into , not an argument, but a discussion , when he said if you're speeding and you crash then irrespective of the circumstances that's your fault.

I put a scenario where I was doing 65mph and someone driving the other way veered into my lane if that would be my fault and he said "Yes it would be because you're breaking the law".

Riiiiiiiight.

Anyway after that I realised that he's just towing his company line, he told us what he does is just one of many jobs he's doing due to lockdown, so no point arguing with him - I just sat there and did as required (which included writing things down on paper and holding them to the Camera, wtf?) until it was time for me to go.

I'd use the opportunity to see how many 'mugs' of vodka and tonic I could drink before it was over.

They tried it with me for overtaking on hatch markings with cars coming the other way, although in my case I was stopped at the roadside. I politely pointed out I never crossed into the opposing lane, that they were surrounded by a broken white line on both sides and that they may wish the refer to the highway code, they dropped it.

My sister got caught by a red light camera a while ago. She's a typical driver - a flat tyre means she just turns the music up louder, and the rear view mirror is only used when she's reversing. Apparently she didn't even see the red lights when she got caught.

She came back saying she was surprised that different cars [sic] had different speed limits. So, put her on a NSL single carriageway, and everybody does 50mph. She couldn't believe that cars could do 60mph and lorries could only do 40mph. Apparently 9 out of 13 people on the course didn't know that.

She also mentioned how the course said that overtaking was discouraged because it's dangerous.

Perhaps they [correctly] thought that lorries could actually do 50mph.

Unless that was in Scotland where LGV limit is 40 on SC

I don't think awareness courses are available in Scotland.

Depends on a how long the 'while' is.

To be fair the general point stands: the reason most people were on my course was utter ignorance of the limit. I'd say half my room were either commercial drivers or trailer-towers who hadn't known they were breaking a differential limit.

Others who had been done didn’t get the whole 'street lights = 30' thing but swore blind that NSL was 50 or even 40mph.

Made me realise why I am often following someone doing precisely 40/50 for miles. A very depressing afternoon.
