Secondhand car from dealer, no V5, no tax?

Friend of mine has just picked up a secondhand car from a dealer, having sold her old one privately yesterday.
The car was bought via one of those internet finance companies (she has a very bad credit rating, but has just got a well-paid job) for £4.5k.
Today was the first time that she had seen the car. She is very happy with the car, but the dealer seems very disorganised. He didn't have the V5. or even details of the previous owner. He told her to go to the Post Office to tax the car and apply for a V5.
Post Office couldn't do it, as she didn't have the previous keepers details.
Back to the dealer, and he got her to part with just under £70 for 6 months tax and a new V5 application, and said he had "got a friend to sort it".
She's now wondering how his "friend" could get it taxed when he obviously couldn't, and she was unable to sort it at the Post Office.
Checking on the .gov website, the car has a fresh MOT, but the tax expired at the end of October. It does say that it may take a few days to show up if it's just been taxed online.
Any ideas what's going on here?
Whenever I've bought a secondhand car from a dealer, they've always sorted out the tax online before letting me drive away.

She's just messaged me, said that the dealer (in Suffolk) has convinced her that his mate from Yorkshire has sorted it.
I suppose it's possible that his mate from Yorkshire is another dealer (who bought the car and still has the V5), and he was selling the car for him down south to get a better price?
The car has a London reg though.
