Landowner responsibility

We live across a public road from a disused golf course. There are no fences.
Recently a few people have decided 'free golf is too tempting to ignore. A few balls have come across the road.
Obviously these 'players' are trespassing so, is it the landowners who are liable for any damage since there is nothing to stop anyone entering their land and whacking balls.
