Mobile Speed Camera Van

Hi, wondering if anyone has any info on the front facing cameras in these (one set up by the seats facing out of the windscreen)......as in are they used to record speed? Or are they just for recording purposes so they have photos of both the front and back of the speeding vehicle (to get number plates on motorbikes, or a photo of who is driving the car depending on the direction they were speeding in), and only the rear camera out of the little window records speed?

I went past one yesterday that was on my side of the road, facing oncoming traffic, so approached the front of the van 1st.
As I approached the front of the van I was maybe speeding by about 10mph, slowed down to within the speed limit before reaching it, then passed it and carried on well below the limit. The speed gun was visible in my rear view mirror, poking out of the window/hatch at the rear of the van but I was well within the limit before then.

I have seen them set up using the front cameras alone with no rear cameras out, it is my understanding that they can catch speed with the front end cameras.

This is what traditionally catches you for speeding out the back of the van.

And this is what apparently most have in the front nowadays, not sure of it is capable of detecting speed though or just for recording number plates etc

Would the front camera be approved to work through the windscreen.
Isn't this why they open up the flap at the back.
The front camera is usually for number plate ID back-up.

Front camera could be for mobile phones and seat belts
Or to record photo of driver/front plate.
Or the car could have been zapping cars coming in the other direction, with the front camera being used where cars had no front plate, or it was obscured in some way.

Front camera is for speed too, at least according to the tweets from our local speed camera authority....

Don't worry. All paid for by people who can't read a big sign with a red ring around it, or simply don't care if they're caught.
I think they have to be a bit techie, because many people on forums like this will try absolutely anything to squirm out of their responsibilities.

Or alternatively are just Petrolheads that enjoy driving and making the most of empty roads on dry sunny days.
