Number plates stolen.
Discussion
If it's any consolation we had no repercussions after plates were stolen from a white transit at work one weekend, I fully expected to be fielding fines, ram raid enquiries and drive offs for a few days.
We did wait a week before putting new plates on it and sending it out again though.

Wife's Micra had the number plates pinched last night.
All reported and crime number obtained. Just have to wait now for the fixed penalty notices/drive offs etc to start coming through.
Shouldn't happen as you've reported it, provided PNC has been updated correctly. All reported and crime number obtained. Just have to wait now for the fixed penalty notices/drive offs etc to start coming through.

That is just superb!

As for those saying they had their plates stolen, but haven't heard anything since, in the way of fines/NIP's etc, all that means is that the people using the stolen plates haven't been caught yet - It doesn't mean the plates aren't being used.
People don't always steal plates/clone vehicles to commit offences that will automatically bring them to the attention of the Police and other authorities.
Think about it:
If someone decides they're not going to pay insurance because the costs are too high, or they're a disqualified driver (a drink driver for example), and can't get insurance, they will happily drive around on cloned plates, and drive around as carefully as any other "normal", so they appear to be the rightful user of the registration number, and don't stand out to the Police and authorities.
Take your vehicle off the road and SORN it, or put another number on your vehicle (as in a private/personal registration number), and there's a good chance that you'll eventually hear from a Police force or authority somewhere, about "your" vehicle being used on the road illegally.
Right now, the rightful owner of the registration is driving around perfectly legally, with their vehicle showing as being insured, taxed and MOT'd (if required), and doesn't come to the attention of the Police or Authorities.
So long as the rightful owner of the registration keeps their vehicle insured, taxed and MOT'd (if required), then there will be another identical car somewhere else, using the same registration number - illegally, that will also show up on checks as being insured, taxed and MOT'd (if required).

I doubt this is their thought process. Look how many people pulled over for driving like arses (dangerously, not just speeding) are found to have no insurance or proper licence. Not drawing attention doesn't see to occur to them.
And how many are driviy around without any lisence insurance ect that have never been pulled I'm.betting it's more then you think

I agree. Someone with the same car will be cloning to drive without paying for tax/insurance or m.o.t. Or could even sell a stolen car (without papers). However safer bet would be to have plates made.
We had plates taken off an old black Golf outside the house. The police pulled over an identical car with our plates on 2 days later. Not the brightest

I thought that plod recommended that the rightful owner puts a couple of bright stickers front and back of the car to use to eliminate any speed camera questions.... Ie, if the other car is identical, how would the rightful owner prove it wasn't them speeding?
So, using stickers or other easily identifiable means, Mark out the car front and rear (GB sticker, football club emblem etc....

I've seen this theory mooted here before but I'm not sure I get it.So, using stickers or other easily identifiable means, Mark out the car front and rear (GB sticker, football club emblem etc....
How does putting a sticker on your car prove it wasn't you in a photo where the car doesn't have a sticker?
You could have put the sticker on at any time after the incident took place.

I agree. Better to drive around with stickers on and then remove them if you ever trigger a speed camera. "Couldn't possibly have been me, my car doesn't sport those stickers" How does putting a sticker on your car prove it wasn't you in a photo where the car doesn't have a sticker?

Really screw the thieves over by fitting a new reg, what they're banking on is you keeping the same, so that they can get tax/insurance free motoring and no parking fines. There's a scrap van which operates near to where I live (it's an old Merc Sprinter), it's been registered as a Mercedes C class for the last 4 years, it's become common practice in many large towns and cities, and illegal private hire/taxi firms do it with their vehicles too.
