Parcel partial delivery

This is a minor (low value) issue and unlikely to go ‘legal’ but I was interested in what the legal position would be:
I ordered 3 items from an online retailer.
2 items were delivered in the package.
3rd item not delivered.
I asked if the 3rd item was coming separately.
Response was that 3rd item was in the same package. Was the packaging intact or damaged.
It wasn’t damaged. The item was a metal water bottle and the whole package was a large plastic bag type affair which I balled up to bin, so impossible to miss a solid metal item.
I’m sure something will get sorted but what would be the position if it wasn’t, how can I prove it wasn’t there? How can they prove it was? What typically would happen in a dispute?
