How to stop someone driving the wrong way on a motorway

The officers involved in this deserve a pat on the back. I was wondering whether an alternative tactic might have been to wait for the car to pass then set off after it and carry out a TPAC manoeuvre instead. Anyway the BiB know what they’re doing!

I reckon your suggestion is what they were planning to do but driver was then closer than planned. The suggestion in the text is the row of stopped traffic wasn’t that far behind so I guess he/she decided to make it a 2 car accident instead of a pileup.

60 seems a bit 'young' but I agree that a re-test is needed at a certain age, maybe start at 80 and repeat every 3 years. I'm sure there's a lot of people under 80 that aren't fit to drive either but these incidents involving people on the wrong side of the motorway always seem to be at the older end of OAP spectrum.

I've only ever been in 1 serious crash and that was caused by a 90yr old not stopping at a T junction. The police and the elderly lady's family who turned up at the scene all agreed that the elderly woman shouldn't have been in control of a car and wouldn't be driving again. It seems currently that you keep your license until you cause a crash which needs to change.

Yes, to be fair 60 is probably a bit on the low side.

I think this is all very sensible and reasonable, and echos the experience we had as a family in getting my own grandfather off the road, fortunately before any accident, but he had a worrying degree of dementia by the time he handed up the keys.

RoSPA advanced test. Maintain your annual membership and you get a free retest every three years. Unless that's changed.

Everything is easy in fantasy land. However...

-RPU cops are extremely thin on the ground
-Effectively co-ordinating units to the right place, right direction on network is tricky and takes time.

The car which struck the offender was clearly at the head of a rolling roadblock of traffic which had been brought to a halt. There was one other unit.

TPAC tactics require 3 cars.
Plus, there’s no way that a car could have gone wrong way without the rolling block.

Best of a bad situation.

Looked like the first cop car was intending to catch the oncoming car's rear and push it into the central reservation and the second was there to stop it trying to get away.

I'd be amazed if the plan was ever to tackle it head-on like that.

You're obviously watching different show to me then, as most of the ones I see seem to be 15-50 year olds...unless you're confusing a gaunt, emaciated, drug-addict with a pallid face with an OAP?
