Interesting Courier fraud?

I'll keep it simple, as my aim is to understand the mechanism used and I got my money back via Paypal.
Bought something online via a Google shopping linked company webpage.
Paid via Paypal using account associated credit card.
Page was https and locked - looked ok.
No communication from seller directly, but received an email update with a courier tracking number.
Several weeks go by and no item.
Several emails sent to seller with no reply.
Tracking states; Collected, returned to sender, arrived at local delivery centre, returned to sender, in transit.
Webchat to courier says it was returned, so ask the sender bud.
So the question here is - how does this happen?
I can't see how you can have a parcel collected from you, and then arrange to have it returned.
I'm pretty sure that this was deliberate, but I'm not sure how it was done.

I didn't see any mention of the OP receiving a refund? Maybe it's in the small print

https ≠ trustworthy website/company - it just means the traffic between you and the website is secure.
The sender is the courier's customer, so they can cancel the delivery any time they want (as long as it hasn't actually been delivered). They may say that you've cancelled the order, so want the item back, or they may not even need to provide a reason.
Yes I got a Paypal refund, but I had to fight for it.
Apparently the seller responded to Paypal's emails, but I wasn't allowed to see what they said.
I guess that the facility to cancel a delivery by a courier while a 'thing' is in transit answers my question as to how potential naughtiness could be done deliberately.

You've probably seen this clip before (and why do these stories only appear on the Daily Mail website - sorry for the DM link

Either damaged in transit .. courier notices this and returns to sender.
OR Courier delivered to wrong address/ your delivery was stuck to someone elses/ your address was missing .. they called courier to say something is wrong , courier collects the goods and as your address isnt clear or there are multiple address labels ... they returned to sender.
lots of scenarios none of them appear to be fraud or even an attempt at fraud.
Your seller would probably be unaware until the goods were returned to them.
