Liability for injury on gifted bicycle

I have a good condition bike that I want to give to a neighbour.
(It's actually a trailer-bike, a child single wheel bike that attaches onto the back of a big bike. This may not be relevant to my question)
My wife says don't do it, as we'll be liable for any injury caused if a child has an accident on the bike.
Is she right?

How can you be liable for any accident that someone may have? They may cycle into a brick wall because they were not looking where they were going, that's not going to be your fault?
If it is roadworthy and your neighbour agrees, and understands how to use it properly, there can be no comeback to you.
If you are worried, you could leave it on the pavement outside your house, tell your neighbour you have disposed of it, by the morning it will have been stolen or taken by said neighbour and you will be absolved of any liability (probably)

To clarify, I meant to say accident caused by a failure on the bike.
Suggest he takes it to a bike shop for a safety check before anyone rides it. If he ignores your advice, that's up to him. Halfords do free safety checks (in an attempt to find work they can charge for, of course).To clarify, I meant to say accident caused by a failure on the bike.
