I've been called for Jury Service starting on 17th May - at which time I believe it will still be compulsory to wear masks in some locations - no idea about courts though.

My question is this - Jury Service is pretty much compulsory (and it's definitely the right thing to do), mask wearing also might be compulsory. Does that mean that I will be put in a position where I have zero choice but to wear a mask?

For the avoidance of doubt, I do wear a mask at the moment, but only when I have to do so and I am doing something that directly benefits me or my family (normally visiting the supermarket).

For the further avoidance of doubt, I am not suggesting that I will swerve anything, I am merely interested in the way the rules around Jury Service and the rules around mask wearing will interact.

I believe you can ask to be deferred once? If you said you would not be able to concentrate fully wearing a mask for a long period of time I think you would likely be discharged.

Presumably if the case actually takes place the jury would be socially distanced from one another?

That's not exactly relevant to the question

Are you still allowed to wear just a face shield in England?
I know its not allowed in Scotland. You have to be masked up.
You could grt yourself a sunflower lanyard and claim to have a medical reason for not wearing a mask.
I have been called 3 times for jury duty and never once had to attend court as my number wasnt required but you dont know until agter 5pm the night before.

Looks like no, in fact during jury service you may be required to remove your mask.

Googled "jury service coronavirus"

Just give the court a call if you're unsure.

Masks are designed to protects others from yourself. It's hardly protecting your family if you don't wear it around them at all times, outside of the supermarket, which I assume you don't.

The whole concept of masks protecting others only works effectively if everyone does it.

You’ll need to wear one wandering around the building but once you’re sat down you can remove it during the trial.

Scotland they can currently all be unmasked when seated. I did it a couple of months back and none of the jurors wore masks when they were seated - all well distanced, 15 people + a tech support guy and 1 court staff spread across an entire odeon cinema screen.

I have attended court a few times during the pandemic (work related) and I can confirm that you will need to wear a mask when walking around the court building inside but when sat in the actual court room no one wears a mask who is there in an official capacity, not sure on the public galary as I have not seen any members of the public attending to spectate whilst I have been there.

Jury members are socially distanced out, I have seen a court with perspex screens between jury members too

In what way is it relevant to "Does that mean that I will be put in a position where I have zero choice but to wear a mask?"

The question is about whether or not the CHOICE would be taken away from me.

Based on your response I assume you don't want to wear a mask. Rather than get into the obvious and ultimately pointless arguments on here I suggest that you simply call the jury service people you and politely ask them if you are required to wear one.

I would call them and tell them I won't be wearing one and then leave it up to them. Certainly in shops the only solution they have to this is to ask you to leave, I don't think there is any law that can force a mask upon you is there.

Exactly this.
Give the court a call and ask what their policy is on anti-maskers.
Will you have your liberties taken away and be forced to wear one or will you retain the right to infect others.
If the response isn't the one you want to hear, consult with solicitor to see what your legal options are.

I wonder if either of you has read the OP and my subsequent replies with the goal of understanding what I was asking / saying. Or did you just read it to confirm your own views?

Yes, I have read all the posts on here. To be honest you have asked a question that could only really be answered by calling the jury service people and asking them. At no point have put forward my own views on what you or I should do in regards to wearing a mask, that is our own business. It looks increasingly like you just want to have an argument with someone, well please count me out of that.

If it's compulsory you'll be asked to wear one (and it ought to be obvious, with signage). if it's not - because they've made alternative COVID-safe arrangements which means masks aren't compulsory, you don't. I would take a mask anyway, to be safe.

It's not as if you're asking whether or not you need to wear a suit or "will pyjamas do?", as in - if you end up there in the wrong outfit then it would be embarassing, and therefore there is a legitimate reason to make sure you're prepared. If you take a mask with you then you'll either need to wear it or you won't. No one will know the answer in advance one way or the other, and the policy may vary from one courtroom to the next.

To be brutally honest the fact you're asking about doing it suggests you feel it is a burden, and coupled with the statement that you only wear one when it "directly benefits me or my family" misunderstands the effect of masks anyway, i.e. that other people wearing them protects you/your family, and you/your family wearing one protects them, in a mutually beneficial way.
