Lady friend buys £1600 ring for her daughter 21st from Selfridges.

Arrives but too small.

Arranges with Selfridges to return to Cartier.

Boxed / wrapped and picked up by DPD.

Arrives at Cartier but customer services say nothing in box.

Cartier liasing with DPD but not sure that will reveal anything.....

Brought by credit card -any options there ?

Report to 101 and action fraud ?

Not wanting to sound mean, but can she prove that the ring was in the box when it was collected and handed over? As it was such a high value item, some sort of an anti tamper tape may have been useful.

If the ring has been stolen, you definitely need to report to plod. Not sure whether it's action fraud or not as it's a straight theft.

How you get your money though is a very different matter. Was it insured against theft in transit? I doubt that DPD will cover it as they delivered a parcel which was presumably complete and wrapped when it got to its destination. But you never know.

Does whatever (domestic) insurance it was covered under provide theft in transit cover?

Credit card might have insurance to cover it, but I doubt that too.

You just need to investigate all the avenues. Hope it works out.

My contribution won’t help you much OP, but just as a talking point this kind of thing is pretty well known amongst horological hobbyists who habitually buy and sell high value, small items using couriers. In this case you have to assume the recipient is not the scammer being as they’re a reputable luxury brand - though it’s not implausible that a rogue employee at their end could have half inched the goods. Assuming the OP’s friend isn’t a scammer then somebody in the DPD chain has nicked it. DPD do offer insurance to cover this kind of issue for valuables in excess of what’s described here and it would frankly have been negligent of Cartier if they chose not to take this out - I would be making some robustly worded phone calls to the company if it turns out they did not. DPD warehouses have CCTV and the parcels are tracked so they will be able to investigate the possibility of theft by one of their employees, though catching the culprit is another matter.

Good practice when buying and receiving goods like this is to film the entire process of boxing up or receiving and opening from start to finish.

I would believe your lady friend should be dealing with Selfridges only, what happened after she handed the ring over is their responsibility.

It is down to Selfridges to make good on the loss as her contract is with them.

All the references to DPD, Cartier, etc is IMHO just noise and distraction.

Now if Selfridges shirk their responsibility then house insurance, credit card, etc maybe of use but are last resort.
