Corrections to S172/NIP

received a S172 to name the driver of the car and the misses who was fully expecting it, filled it in.

But she filled in section A which says it should only be done by the person who's name is on the letter (me), and section B overleaf should be done if its someone else.

Section B seems to infer (if your not thinking straight) that it should only be completed if you have sold the car, (as it has disposal date etc) and so the form is slightly ambiguous of which section a named driver on the car should sign.

Assumedly the misses should have completed section B and left the n/a parts blanks?

Does anyone know what we should do, ask for another form?

Simply cross through the section A data and fill in section B and send off?

Left a voicemail with the force in question, but nothing back yet.

someone responded but then deleted, as i think was duff info. however made me re-read yet again, and the only one signing it should be the addressee, so me.

so assume section b, listing the OH's details, and then i sign at bottom.

so should i cross through section A or ask for a new form?

Just cross it out it will be fine

The S172 notice goes to the registered keeper (RK) of the vehicle.

The RK fills it in to say who was driving at the time of the alleged offence (either the RK or someone else) and returns it.

The NIP then gets sent to the nominated driver to fill in and return.

The s172 and NIP are sometimes “combined” into a composite form. Different forces will have different layouts, so section A in one place might be different to section A somewhere else.

If it was me, I’d just cross out with a single line the bits your wife has filled in and fill them in yourself (as the RK). I’d probably send a simple covering letter saying something like “Sorry, other half filled the form in by mistake, I realise it should’ve been me as RK, I’m nominating other half as the driver at time of alleged offence”.

It’s a mistake and it happens lots of times every day. The staff in the process unit will have it seen it countless times before. Don’t try and fudge it, because you risk making life more difficult, just be straight and it should be sorted.
