SORN'D car outside of the UK

Now am planning to drive it back - the old trick with a MOT appointment booked the same day

Have they cracked down on this? I think its an offense to declare SORN if the car is outside the UK?

If UK registered, the car must be taxed, even if abroad - yep
Tax it before leaving EU, and as you say, make sure you're on route to a pre-booked MOT test

I'd do exactly that - pre-booked MOT and drive it back

Unless you trailer it you are under as much risk in the country you drive it in as here - both will require the car is meeting the legal standards of the UK to be used on public roads either there or here.

If you feel the chances of you getting stopped in the host country are low, maybe just arrange the MOT when you are on the ferry here? You can legally drive to the MOT in the UK with no tax.

No different to the number of EU plated cars that seem to be driven happily round my area for years without local registration - they used to get away with it by claiming that they had been outside of the UK in the last few months but with the Rona restricting travel I'm not sure that washes these days

It was locked away in a garage in Germany but I get your point...
I might just get it transported but even then going through customs might be more of an issue
