Number plate fine

Got stopped for illegal plate on bike, copper took a photo comparing it with a “legal size plate” told worst case scenario is £100 fine in the post. No receipt of a ticket or anything to say I’d been stopped, just said it’s all done online now will be sent out to me. It’s now been 2 weeks and not had anything through, does anyone know a time period for usual stuff like this?

Didn’t say anything about court, just said if I wanted to challenge the fine I would have to go to court if not just pay the fine and that’ll be it. Also, why 6 months when speeding fines have to be within 14 days?

You will probably have had a verbal Notice of Intended Prosecution at the roadside.

The 14 days is for them to tell you, which in this case is covered by the copper doing so in person.

It wasn’t, it was across one line. Should of been across 2 etc etc. Have changed it to a legal one now.

A very few offences require the giving of an NIP - either verbal at the time of the stop or within 14 days by post.

Number plate issues isn't one of them.

When I got stopped for a similar issue (mis-spaced plate, there's a thread on here somewhere) he told me it would be reported to HQ and they would decide the penalty. Got a letter a few weeks later asking me kindly for £100 and pictures proving that the plate had been corrected.

VDRS would have got the plate changed without punishing the rider. Out of fashion with many forces now unfortunately

Yeah that’s is what he said to me, the head honcho would decide on the penalty. How did you go about paying for your fine, is there a link to follow or something on the letter?

If a fixed penalty is to be issued, it could happen any time between now and up to maybe 4 months from when you were pulled.

I think I had to pay online, there's a URL in the letter you have to go to, and you have to enter the ticket reference number.

Exactly that happened to me! I was counting the days down, thought I was in the clear.

The day before the 6month deadline I got the letter.

Usually because the paperwork never arrives and the "computer" just pumps out a court summons the day before 6 months is up.

When I bought my Honda Fireblade, previous owner had what can only be described as a yellow caterpillar on the back as a number plate. He said he was always getting pulled on the bike. I swapped it out same day for a legal plate, never had any grief at all from the police.

Is it worth it?
