Dad gifting personalised plate they bought in 1996

Hi all,
My dad is gifting me his private reg he's had on his van now he's retired. However they originally bought the reg plate in 1996 and transferred it onto his current van in 2004. I've looked on DVLA for help but can't find anything but they don't have a V750 for it so we're not sure what we need to do to continue to transfer it?
Do we go through the lost or stolen V750 process or is there something else?

If its still on the van you simply apply to retain the plate and pay £80. You can even do it online instantly, as long as certain stipulations are met, and you will receive the retention doc within two weeks which will have the reference number that allows you to put it on another car.
If you do it online then it is pretty instant.
Put your Dad's plate on Retention and then put the new plate from the DVLA on your Dad's car - alerting his insurers.
It'll be age related to his car.

When they give you the new number I think you have three days to get the plate made and fit it, although your dad's old plate might fit.
If not, you will get a certificate authorising you to get a plate made.
Advise the insurance company when you change it.
A new V5 will be sent to you by DVLA pretty quickly.

Yeh I've ordered a new plate but they want proof of my V5c or the V778 so I've got to wait for them to come through.
There's a few Irish companies who make plates without documents needed, I think some sell through eBay. They are still fully legal so long as they have the name and address of the supplier on it, which most do.Edited by Gareth79 on Saturday 15th May 21:25
