Unmarked RR on M6 Bridge - speed camera?

Went past an unmarked white Range Rover t'other day northbound on the M6 near Lancaster...
It was parked on a bridge in the perfect position for to catch cars coming over a brow and round a bend. I could see that the passenger side window (facing me) was open but I couldn't tell if there was any apparatus being used.
Has anyone been snapped speeding by an unmarked car from a motorway bridge?

More likely they were monitoring traffic looking for someone/something in particular.It was parked on a bridge in the perfect position for to catch cars coming over a brow and round a bend. How did you know it was either an unmarked Range Rover, or a speed trap?It was parked on a bridge in the perfect position for to catch cars coming over a brow and round a bend. I could see that the passenger side window (facing me) was open but I couldn't tell if there was any apparatus being used.

To clarify, I don't know it was the police, it was just the position of it seemed unusual. It could indeed have been borked or just a couple a people whiling away an afternoon watching the traffic...

Nope. An unmarked cop car would be using a laser gun for speed enforcement and would pull you at the time. I was really just wondering if anyone had experience of unmarked police cars operating speed cameras in such a way?

We used to have the largest fleet of Range Rovers in the country ... last new ones bought were in 2006!As you say other than the Met for SEG/VIP/Royalty who have a very small number I don’t know any still being used for road patrol
A bridge is a straight bit of road, so if someone is looking to park in the area, that's where they'll park. Some people stand on motorway bridges photographing lorries and coaches for a hobby, so someone might do it from inside a car if the weather is poor.
I did once encounter traffic braking for an old chap leaning on his walking stick off to the side of a motorway bridge watching traffic. At a glance, he looked like he could have had a speed gun on a tripod.

A couple of years ago I was heading West through the Brynglas tunnel on the M4. 50 mph limit and doing 50. I crept past a white car possibly BMW or Audi that was just below my speed so not a fast pass. The rear offside window was open and I spotted a small camera but no otherequipment. The car was unmarked and the driver male in a plain white shirt with no “ uniform” bits.
I have never seen this before or after. No idea what the purpose was.

Thanks for all the replies folks. If that is a favoured spot for camera vans then I'll bet it's a happy hunting ground as the whole of N Lancs & Cumbria M6 seems to attract lots of 100mph+ speed fiends.

There was some kind of police operation going on there on Friday evening - I was heading north from Preston to Linlithgow and saw several police units repeatedly overtake and sat on the ‘police only’ raised sections of the hard shoulder.
No clue what was going on, but there was an unmarked silver Focus on one of the aforementioned raised parts near Kendal which then flew past me at 90+ some minutes later, closely followed by some kind of marked up 4x4 with the neon asterisks in the rear window (can’t remember what they denote). Several ‘normal’ traffic units then followed over the next few minutes, then must have come off and rejoined as they all passed us again near Penrith.
How odd!
