We are bombarded with go paperless and to it all online, save paper, etc, etc.

My question, a utility bill, bank statement, etc is still used as mostly secondary ID for some things. If you have gone paperless, is a printout of screen cap of a bank statement or utility bill as acceptable/valid as a formal one from a bank or utility company?

Thanks.

Surely depends. You'd need to ask the entity asking you what they'll accept

Just download as a pdf and print.

Most say no to a printed copy. We have opened a few more bank accounts, and we get HSBC monthly statements. I am not stopping those. I also have paper bills for my water supply (Dŵr Cymru). I am keeping those. Most organisations want a hard copy no older than 3 months, but they seem to be OK with my water bills which are 6-monthly.

I've never had a printed copy of a bank statement and the like refused.

Maybe not. I imagine that stated requirement is ignored most of the time, but I don’t want to faff around if it is rejected.

What's the stated requirement?

Originals dear boy, originals.

We did once mock up a photocopy of a manager's (life assurance co) death certificate which surprised him somewhat as he had no idea he was supposed to be dead. And we had "real fakes" certificates come in from certain third world countries.

If you download a PDF directly from your online account it is an original.

Absolutely zero difference from anything you get in the post.

You can normally access a download/print version through your on line account. For example I'm currently changing my mortgage and they need bank and HMRC statements. Both are paperless, but I can download PDF versions, which I can then email to the broker.

Go to ‘download a statement’ (as PDF) on your online account, and email that to the company that needs requires the proof.

Done it lots of times and always OK.

IME whenever proof of address is needed, the person requesting will accept a PDF of a download.

I've just changed mortgage provider and I only had to email my latest payslip and bank statement. All ok. As for proof of address for other purposes, I've used pdf's of online bills and they've been fine.

Done quite a lot of ID'ing in the last few months and not had any issues with emailing PDFs (and in one case screen shots from online banking of accounts that didn't seem to have any statements). There is the more sophisticated online mechanisms coming in to prove you are the person in the DL or passport scans. Had to do that to open an account to invest my £100 in Ethereum biggrin. The NHS app needs a video as does a service that a solicitor used.

I think the days of the "original" paper doc sent to you by the bank, utility co etc are long since dead!

Bert

And yes it went down!

Considering how easy it is to mockup a document and create a pdf I wonder if the receipients could tell the difference between a genuine and mocked up document. Pretty much any word processing app will spit out a pdf these days.

As a form of ID even as a secondary one I think it is totally useless.

Of course, we could solve a lot of this by having identity cards.

No ID card could mean no NHS services etc.

High time this happened.

Same argument can be said for any physical document with a half decent printer.
