MoT law for pre 2003 registered cars.

I know that EML is not a failure for pre 2003 cars, but I can't find any clarity regarding VSC/ESP llights.

Any MoT testers or lawyers able to give clarity?

That's what they said to me about the EML last year. However the Mot law regarding EML is different for cars registered before 2003. That said I can't find a reference to the pre 2003 vehicle exemptions, so I wondered if the VSC was included in the EML exemptions. Would be nice to see a definitive list of the pre 2003 exemptions.

I did do a search but coiuldn't find any refs. Guess PH'ers all drive new cars :-)

When a regulation is different to a certain age of car the manual makes that clear. Lots of stuff is not tested on pre-1986 cars for instance. Where the manual is silent on dates then it is tested regardless of the age of the vehicle if a system is present

I hope you are right, but last year I paid a fortune to have uneccessary work done because a main dealer failed my pre 2003 car. Do you have example of regs in relation to EML's. I can't find any.

It's a 2001 Lexus GS430 with VSC & EML lights showing. Nothing is not working.

“ Engine malfunction indicator lamp (engine management light or ‘EML’)
Turn on the ignition and check that the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates and then goes off. On some vehicles it will be necessary to start the engine before the MIL goes off.

You need to inspect MIL fitted to:

petrol vehicles with 4 or more wheels, not more than 8 passenger seats in addition to the driver’s seat and first used on or after 1 July 2003
petrol vehicles with 4 or more wheels, more than 8 passenger seats in addition to the driver’s seat and first used on or after 1 July 2008
gas and bi-fuel vehicles with 4 or more wheels, not more than 8 passenger seats in addition to the driver’s seat and first used on or after 1 July 2008
Kit cars, amateur built vehicles and American pickups are not required to be fitted with an engine MIL.”

Thanks, I've had a quick look. I think the VSC light relates to a code read for VVT. It's the only code I get. You know what Sherlock says....
