Just heard a piece in R4 about the sound cameras that were installed as a trial in Chelsea and Kensington, to deter the users of noisy cars. It’s been declared a success apparently with very few repeat offenders.
The Police lady being interviewed was not from that area, but from North Yorkshire, she was clearly delighted with the idea siting the intrusive motorcycle noises frequently heard in the Dales as being a particularly nuisance which could be curtailed with these devices.
This appears to me to be another thin end of the wedge situation, which I have to say has been created by a few frankly ridiculously noisy vehicles that will end up impacting anybody who has a slightly noise car, or bike!. Another case of the minority spoiling it for the majority.
I’d be really interested to know what the parameters of the ‘ ‘cameras’ are, I would assume they are set at some drive by sound limit, set by EU legislation or something.

This is why I quite like the idea of stuff like the GR Yaris, which sounds pretty quiet on the outside, but meaty on the inside (even if it is a little fake, who cares as long as it makes you smile). I used to quite like loud cars but lets face it most of them sound crap. I'd rather have induction noise these days, which is usually a lot more subtle from the outside.

But I have no idea what that is and how certain cars seem to be able to circumnavigate them, usually with those exhaust bypass systems.
That’s leaving aside modified cars and older stuff like my own classics which suck hard and loud through side draught carbs.

In fairness it's probably targeting the bellends that sit outside Harrods (yes, I know, wrong borough) revving their Gallardos while sat still.But as is always the case, what starts in London will spread.
As long as the limits are set correctly, this needn't be a bad thing.
I live in a rural area and have no real issue with the sound of cars or bikes, as mostly it's a faint roar in the distance. We for have one lad with a moped that has clearly been modified to make an almighty blaring noise. It only lasts for a few seconds, but it is quite unpleasant as he goes past and a billion rpm. There is also a plumb in a modified S3 that does about 400mph through the village. If it stops that kind of thing in cities and villages, great.
They won't be able to retrospectively ban standard cars, and they won't need to as older cars disappear from the roads, so it should only effect those with stupidly loud exhaust systems they are being driven hard, which should be a non issue for anyone in a London borough or a 30 zone.

This might be PistonHeads, but obnoxiously loud cars deserve to be clamped down. Same with motorbikes. Noise cameras get my vote.
Being able to hear someone "enjoying their car" from 100m away isn't acceptable.

i used to work in that road and they were really annoying for anyone not just passing through,
There was a guy around my way a few years ago who had an extremely loud motorbike, I’d often here hear him tearing up the road at all times of day and night. He’d probably only had it for 2/3 months when he hit a road sign, its much quieter around here now.

Not sure about the smaller bikes, where we are with our Holiday Van near Leyburn I can here the big Bikes maxing the revs on the Tank Road near the ranges and its well over a mile away. Some are incredibly loud. It was those I had in mind when I posted originally saying the few will spoil it for the many.Edited for typo

2 stroke mopeds with 'tuned' exhausts are horrible, high pitched, penetrating and extremely loud. And slow, takes them ages to disappear from range.DaveE87 said:

A bit more than a few, they are not small bikes and it is more than a mileEdited for typo
I live in Staffordshire. If we are outside, or inside with a window open, we hear the bikes go round the town. You hear them slow for the roundabouts and accelerate away. Some would say what harm is there but when you get one or two every two or three minutes all day it becomes a bit wearing. BTW the road they are on is 1 1/2 miles away at its closest so they are audible at least two miles away.
I bet all the bikers are wearing ear plugs because the bikes are so loud - antisocial b++++++s!
All for noise cameras, would like the police stopping them every weekend and doing vehicle checks, average speed cameras - anything to make them go somewhere else on their bikes.
