I was stopped on 2 May and given a NIP. I have just received 2 of these for the same stop. Is that allowed or can I query it. Surely they can't fine me for each plate? front and back?

VE94134 is not a NIP which is a completely different thing & not relevant for registration plate offences.

You say you were stopped & given a NIP. What was the NIP for? Common offences requiring a NIP include: dangerous driving, careless driving, speeding and disobeying traffic signs and traffic signals. The NIP can be given verbally by the police at the time of the offence or a formal letter can be sent by post.

A very quick google suggests the number plate offence carries a fine of £100 & no penalty points.

Perhaps they've decided to issue you with one for each number plate?

I've never thought about it before, but I suppose they could fine you for both. If you have two bald tyres they will fine you for both.

As far as I'm aware, you'll get 3 points and a corresponding fine for each illegal tyre you have on your car. Are you saying that's wrong?

It's a myth, but along with all tyre law myths there is a hint of truth which is why they persist.
If you commit multiple offences that carry point as part of the same occasion you should only receive point based on one offense, which ever is the highest, so even if you are charged with 2 tyre offenses you should only receive 3 points.
There can be exceptional circumstances where you receive points for 2 different offenses so I guess it is not impossible, but there was a guy last year that won an appeal to get his 6 points reduced to 3.

Back in 2002 a friend of mine got 6 points when both his front tyres were below the limit. Harsh treatment I felt - they were only 7k miles old and the outer edge was fine, just the well hidden inner edge

I just trying to find out if I can contest the fact that they have fined me twice? I accept that I broke the law, but 2 fines? for such a minor discrepancy.


The letters, number and font were all perfect literally just the space between the zero and the R move to between the R and the S. ANPR would have no difficulty in recognising the reg.

Just an alternate view. You didn't break the law twice, you broke it every time you went out . If you think of it that way just two fines is a bargain.

He's not disputing that. He's asking if he should be fined one, or twice in a single stop.

It's not a major crime or even one that has any safety implications, so it's a fair question.

This is correct, but it's worth adding that the Road Traffic Offenders Act 28 (4) (which says, in plain English, that you should usually only get the points for the most serious offence) only applies to penalty points. There doesn't seem to be any reason why you couldn't get a fine for each tyre, and indeed the Magistrates' sentencing guidelines say that you should.



No points for a dodgy numberplate, but a fine for each one doesn't seem like a huge stretch.

Bald tyres are a safety issue. Relocating a space in a number plate is not.

I’ve seen a few wildly illegal plates recently spacing.

If you don’t mind I’m curious as to your mindset of not conforming to the legal requirement. Let’s face it you have a way cooler car than most of us could own, yet you felt that you didn’t need to comply with the law with your number plate as the majority of people do?
