Hi there,

I was clocked on speed distance between entry and exit on Tower Bridge doing 40 in what was apparently a 20. I did not know the speed as I turned on the bridge after the road sign. This was my first offence.

For this I have received 4 points and £235 fine.

Apart from unlucky and mind the speed limit next time - does anyone have any comments on the above, possibility of appeal?

If you can prove it was not possible to see the 20mph sign on the route you took then maybe you should have appealed and taken it to court. Now you've got the fine/points I suspect it will be a trickier process.

I'd have a visit to the forums at www.Pepipoo.com - there was some discussion if the limit on Tower Bridge was as dodgey as the limit on Upper Thames Street...

Thanks for the help...

Looks like I'm not the only one - sign posting on the bridge contradicts as its a world hertiage site - WDF!!!

I just thought 4 point were steep.

i was clocked doing 37 and went to plead guilty at magistrates.
I got 3 points + 80quid fine + 35quid costs. In the same hearing were ten others with similar offfences. Under 40mph seemed to get 3points + 80quid fine. Over 40mph was 4 points +similar fine as it's twice the speed limit. Your fine seems excessive - did you challenge it or something? Another driver tried the signage argument. The magistrates said that many drivers had raised this, but legally the signs were sufficient for a world heritage site where the 20 is to protect the bridge structure really, not pedestrians, etc. They must be making a mint, the plod had a pile of over 100 fines for that day alone!!!

DVD- I'm not sure from the article why the specs cams on Upper Thames street were deemed illegal. Is it that they are not placed in a danger spot. I recall signage is in place showing 20mph.

I figured they could place the damn things where evr they pleased or is the 3 serious accident rude over X years rule?

I think that has something to do with 20mph not being a legally enforceable speed limit.

The limit signs were put in a different place from the traffic order.

The cameras on Upper Thames Street are a bit dodgy because the camera first takes a picture of you when you're still in the 30 zone (please feel free to correct me if this is wrong anyone), but the limits either side of the 20 zone are 30mph and as far as I recall, the 20 zone is pretty heavily signposted.

Looks like we got done by the exact same guidelines. I got 4 points and £235 too for 92mph on a motorway.

Yes there are signs there, but take another look at the ABD pic.

One of the cameras is facing into the zone. Fine, hopefully there's another one situated inside the zone at the other end, so the average speed will be computed for driving within the 20 zone. However there's a second specs camera on the same gantry facing towards the photographer, so cars approaching the limit will start to have their average speed measured outside the 20 zone. That's just not cricket m'lud.

Edited to add the pic:

Not sure what's happened since the cock up came to light, but there are similar situations in roadworks up and down the country, last one I saw was in the M1 roadworks ooop north, on the opposite carriageway they had specs gantries outside the reduced limit section which were OK as they had no cameras...yet, presumably they were ready for the roadworks to move down the motorway. On the side I was driving, there were gantries which did have cameras, two or three sets for more than one junction past the end of the roadworks. Around J15 - 16 iirc. Who knows if they were switched off? Some drivers slowed back to the lower limit in lane 1 after seeing the first gantry yet the cams semed to be checking lane 3. Wonder what happened there.

I heard this morning that the cameras on Upper Thames Street were moved and the people that had been done were refunded their points and fines.

Sounds about right, on the PPP thread somebody posted a copy of a FPN from Upper Thames St. and it said something like "You were caught travelling XXXm in XX.Xs, an average of XXmph" and the calculation was clearly incorrect. I suggested that perhaps the timings were pulled from the data stream but the distance was from the scammers records. So the speed might have been calculated from the SPECS system ok (albeit looking at the wrong limit) but the cameras themselves might have been placed incorrectly.

Bout time they educated PEDESTRIANS about the perils of the road. In my school days (Pre 61) we used to have the BIB come around with their nice shiney Wolsey police cars, and do lots of demos for us kids, one was a car screeming across the playground and skidding to a stop (no ABS in those days), it really brought home the distance etc cars took to stop. As a cyclist, I always wonder why people who cross roads dont bloody look, coz they cant hear a car they ASSUME nothing si coming, dont know what the distance is, but bikes dont stop all that fast from 20-30 mph.
