Police want volunteers to clean, fix and drive vehicles!

Posted by Surrey Police on Facebook, seeking volunteers to clean, maintain and occasionally move their vehicles. They ideally want people with C1/D1 categories on their driving licences. As you can imagine, the response has been pretty mixed! I don't know exactly what they mean by maintain - is it just checking fluids and tyre pressures, or is there more to it? I'm sure it would appeal to a youngster.

Raises a few questions...

1. Why aren't police doing first parade checks themselves, and why would you delegate to a volunteer?

2. Would you really trust a volunteer to maintain a car you use professionally?

Devon & Cornwall Police use volunteers for police car cleaning, it seems to appeal to youngsters on the autistic spectrum as well as older retired chaps

I'd have a go at the driving. But only pure sweeney style, hubcaps flying, tyres squealing....

I don't live too far away, am retired and have C1 and D1 - but b*llocks to doing it voluntarily!

And I don't really like cleaning cars as I'd rather drive them, ideally with Blues and Twos - although not Astras and Transits.

They don't want much do they?

I would enjoy that, and I have those categories. But I’m not that side of London. Still, worth looking at for the future - also looking at their paid roles if you go up one level in the search

Save police a bit of cash. Youngsters doing a bit of car cleaning - mix with police a bit.

Older retired mechanic chap, might love to help out.

If it was ambulances, for overstretched NHS?

How about inviting school children to wash local fire engines on a Saturday morning?

Volunteers willingly perform all manner of menial tasks for public bodies: councils, the NHS, the prison service, social services and so on.

What you prefer, that someone be paid to do these tasks or the money be spent on front line services?

People volunteer to be specials so they’re trying their luck with this. It means there’s several hours in every day free for frontline services to be out there rather than in a station checking vehicles by the sound of it.

Doing more with less is the government way.

Costs little more than a regular battenburg scheme I believe. It didn't bother me four years ago, still doesn't now.

not totally against volunteer work , but id sooner help a pensioner or someone needy
