What does road tax have to do with insurance? I've not read that it invalidates your insurance policy for having an untaxed car. What do car traders do that dont have trade plates but have 4 or 5 cars in stock? tax them all?I believe the only get around is a pre booked MOT at your closest MOT station.

Do the police just report you to DVLA?
Do the police let you go on your way with no road tax after stopping you?
I need to take my £0 road tax car a couple miles away to get some bodywork done. Salvage vehicle, no v5, no documents at all. But it does have a valid and recent MOT looking online. And I do have motor trade insurance, so the car is on the MID database.

You could, potentially, get a FPN. I seem to remember something like eighty quid. Do the police just report you to DVLA?

Realistically, unless you really, REALLY fail the attitude test, I’d be surprised if there was any actions at all.
At the end of the day, it’s insured and MOT’d. And the tax value is zero. The bloke upstream talking about no insurance etc., is just making things up.
Going back a number of years now (About 17) so still had to display tax discs and meaning this is well out of date!
I was parked outside a Police Station and I'd completely forgot to tax the car, genuine mistake and it had expired the previous month.
When I got back I had a notice stuck over my old tax disc from the Police basically saying I had been reported to the DVLA. Renewed the tax that same day and never heard anything more about it.

Car can be seized for no tax. Not all forces do it but we do in certain circumstances. No tax = no insurance - Wrong

Off the top of my head it’s after 90 days from when it was last taxed or from day one if it’s SORNd.
A few years ago I bought a Volvo it came 'taxed', I got my dates mixed up and thought it still had over a month left - turns out the disc only had a few days left.
I got pulled by a traffic cop on the motorway, they gave me a £60 FPN for no tax and that was it.
They did try to pull the 'You have no insurance as you have no tax' - a quick call to my insurance company put that to bed.

Even if your policy did say that your car had to be taxed (and I've never seen a policy that did say that), your insurance company would only be able to refuse to pay a claim if your lack of tax somehow contributed to the accident. It's not obvious how an accident could be caused by the lack of tax, so for all practical purposes you would still be insured. Griffith4ever said:

My local force posts a lot about motoring. A quick scan of their Facebook page reveals that they seem to dislike no MOT or licence offences far more than road tax, although they do seem to go hand in hand most of the time. The offences, that is, not the local force. However on this occasion, they initially stopped the van for no tax and it seems they seized it for that under Operation Excise. So they clearly do pay attention to no tax, but not all the time.
