Banned company director caught drink driving Porsche

This popped up on my newsfeed on my phone and I realise it's barely newsworthy. I don't know why he was banned in the first place, but the article says that he holds multiple directorships. It got me wondering. I can't contemplate not being able to drive as the demands of my life mean it's very difficult to plan ahead. But I'm currently self employed in IT and work mostly from home with the occasional site visit required. But how exactly are you supposed to run a business (let alone multiple) if you aren't allowed to drive? I would imagine that most businesses which employ people will require regular directors to attend meetings and events here and there and that would be very difficult without being able to drive. How do people who don't drive manage to run businesses? The mind boggles!

Already a disqualified driver and not only drives but is also a disgusting amount over the limit. To actually get above 100ugs is not something you do and then think you’ll be fine to drive.
Without doubt it won’t be the first time he’s either driven or drink-drived since disqualified.
Shame fine and ban not bigger/longer. In fact having ignored the ban and also driven over the limit, shame he didn’t have a bit of prison time.
Hate drink drivers. Going back to original poster, absolutely no sympathy for any transport problems.

For clarity, I'm not planning on joining him!
But if the pandemic has proven anything, I could definitely run this business without being able to drive.
Client meetings I usually went to got moved to Facetime, Zoom and Teams and I still did the business. Now I'm back out meeting people, it would be a nightmare at times to get about but, if I absolutely had to, I could rely on trains, taxis etc. Or just have Mrs PB drive me about - she works with me anyway.
The bigger issue would probably be having to explain why I couldn't go to a meeting. A drink-driving banned insurance broker doesn't sound ideal!

A good friend has never learned to drive and yet has successfully owned & run multi-million pound companies for the last 40 years. He's been based in London & New York and (probably rightly) maintains that being able to drive in either city is of no practical benefit. On the other hand he's always had a wife with a car

Friend of mine - late 30's - had his licence removed out-of-the-blue for medical reasons and it took several years to get it back. He was a sales manager and had to move house to be near the office and a station and just generally had a nightmare getting around.LM240 said:

I concur. I’m absolutely sure he’s been getting away with it for a while and he’s probably surprised he’s been caught. As for also drink-driving, he probably thought it wouldn’t make things worse if he were caught again. He was nearly right as he got off pretty lightly in my opinion!LunarOne said:

Not defending him but it may be that the guy has psychological problems that mean he’s dependent on alcohol. Its surprising the number of people that are unable to function without regular substance use e.g. a bottle of wine every night after work seems insignificant but it makes their lives manageable. They are often caught as repeat offenders as it’s the only way they can survive.Unless you are living in the middle of butt f*ck nowhere I don't see the problem - and even then !! There are plenty of things to hinder you more in life than not being able to drive (disabled children, missing limb, blindness, living on the breadline). Just look at the number of young people that don't drive now. It used to be a given to learn to drive at 17 but now.........
If being a Company Director and not being able to drive is your biggest worry I would suggest that 'you' are either very young or lead a pampered life. Travel to a third world country and you will see people that overcome 'real' issues in order to work and live.

Never get the logic of pleading your job title as a defence. If you know the criticallity of your licence to fulfil your job, then you don't drink and drive, or drive whilst banned.

I don't believe there's any suggestion that he's used directorship to try to get out of his sentence. The news outlet will have added that to flesh out their article. But company director isn't a job title he's given himself. It's a legal position you are given when you form a company. You can resign from the directorship of a company, but without a director a company cannot exist.Sounds like a bulls

The director sadly passed away after suffering cancer, and the gym had to close. Customers were not even allowed to access the gym to retrieve personal property as with no director, the premises were not allowed to open due to public liability, arguments over who owned what... It was a sorry mess that took time to resolve.
As the OP notes we don't know why he was banned in the first place. But if it was a "standard" 56 day ban for
too much right foot, then he could easily have worked around that. So quite possibly longer for a more serious
offence or totting up.

A few years ago I was watching an episode of Eggheads. The viewer team consisted of four youngish early 20s lads whoPip
all seemed quite bright so presumably had at least half-decent jobs. A motoring law question came up and they could not
answer it. Reason - none of them could drive.
