Want a speed limit raised, then tailgate...

... is the message sent out by Warrington Council: Warrington Guardian article. Doesn't seem to work on motorways. But seriously, I'm glad that some inappropriate limits are being re-evaluated and increased.
Lots of comments below the article suggesting that the current limit just needs to be enforced more and that raising the limit us just pandering to lawbreakers. Plus a couple of comments that if the limit is increased everyone will just exceed the new limit by 10mph.
It would have looked better if the council had simply not mentioned tailgating and aggressive driving and simply said that the design and nature of the road makes 40mph a more appropriate limit. Talking about tailgating and aggressive driving will just make the BRAKE crowd say "the bullies have won".
Oddly enough TFL of all people increased the speed limits on some of their roads a few years back (30-40mph on the Coulsdon Relief Road and 40-50mph on the A13) so this isn't unheard of.

My mum recently did a speed awareness course for 24mph in a 20, and that is on such a road where they put up a speed camera because so many people flouted the limit. Before that, driving at 20 you would have people up your backside, honking, overtaking etc. Apparently half the people on that course were done by this camera or the one on the other side of the road.

Apart from a schoolchild running for the ferry and leaping the barrier instead of using the zebra crossing (I know people in the area who lived on one side of the river but went to school on the other so used the ferry twice daily), there really aren't any other hazards nearby that would warrant a 20mph limit. A few hundred meters up the road you've got the mounties but there's no camera there.

Auto I'm assuming? I had a car that would want to creep faster than most, especially when cold. I remember locking it into either 2nd or 3rd on a cold idle until I hit the main road to avoid dabbing the brakes. RECr said:

Agree with your thoughts completely here. The worst thing is, the “BRAKE” crowd are actually the biggest bullies - enforcing a minority view on a passive majority. Good to see some common sense at last.
