Transferring the reg from a barn find....

Just picked up a 70's Kawasaki with a nice 5 digit reg that I wouldn't mind saving if possible. Bike is basically scrap and only good for parts but the reg is on the dvla database as last taxed in 86. How do I go about getting the plate? It was found in a shed of a house being cleared so no paperwork, so V62 to get the V5 and then apply to transfer the plate?

Yep that. Needs to be MOT'd.
It's taken 22 years to get the reg from our barn find, of that it's been 20 years restoring it and 2 years to get the DVLA to transfer the car back to it's original plate (very very long story)
Sadly, not a quick turnaround.

Surely as it's tax exempt I can just await the v5, then tax it, friendly mot and hope the dvla don't ask to inspect? if they do....bodge it up as a stripped down cafe racer style bike?

I'm reading lots of older posts which say the inspection is to confirm frame numbers add up and some people have taken non running vehicles partway through restoration for inspection and they have been fine, has something changed in the last 10 years?

I wonder if anyone has ever bought an identical running moted vehicle, swapped the registrations, got it moted, and taxed, transferred the reg to another vehicle, and then flogged both identical vehicles now they have the reg on the vehicle they want?

Hasn't been on the road or taxed for so long then DVLA will want to inspect it

There's also the small matter of the frame number which would need to be checked by both MOT man and the DVLA inspector - on a Kwacker that's going to be stamped on the headstock tube.

Perhaps I am reading those notes on the link wrong, but it seems to say it must be an MOT testable type of vehicle, not that it has passed an MOT. It also says it can be SORN not taxed.

Back in the 1990s I had to take a Morris Minor to a DVLA office in Southsea for them to check its chassis numbers. I had to show them where it was..... The car had been on the road a while (years).

I've transferred numbers off cars at least a dozen times since and never been asked again; the small issue being there are no more DVLA offices. So I'm not sure where they would carry out a check now?

Presumably at the same venue they'd use to carry out an SVA check - assuming that's still a thing?!

They come to you - the inspections were conducted by SGS but they use another contractor now
