Received a fixed PCN (the yellow ones stuck to windscreen) by the council for parking in a loading area.

Looked at the PCN and noticed they have entered my registration in wrong, the last 2 digits are the wrong way around.

At this point, do I even need to bother appealing the charge or is the incorrect registration enough to simply validate the PCN?

... invalidate ...

They probably have photos (most do these days). They will write to the registered keeper of xxACB who will deny being there. They will then look at the photos and identify xxABC as the correct registration and start pursuing you / the registered keeper. Do you feel lucky?

But if a PCN is invalidated due to wrong reg, then what use would it be looking at photos to get the correct reg?

Surely an 'on the spot' PCN cannot be issued 6 weeks later via photographic evidence. All I really want is a concrete answer as to whether the PCN is invalidated due to wrong reg, or not.

What is the basis of your appeal?

Would be far too difficult to explain without adding a lot of detail and pics of the area etc, which I can't really do now as at work. But if the PCN is invalid anyway due to wrong VRM then it's a mute point I guess.

Because they can then issue a revised PCN with the corrected reg to the registered keeper.

If the OP does nothing and the 'auto generated'? letters with the wrong reg keep going to another vehicle owner/address.

How long before/if they even bother to check the pics to confirm and send the correct docs to the OP?

At that point the OP could ask to see a copy or original ticket if they send photos thru which will show a different reg.

If i was the OP I'd sit tight and wait for them to chase the ticket up and deny all knowledge of receiving one ( it blew off/was removed so opp never saw it)

That might work. But.. the op would be lying and if it did go to court and they could provide proof he did know (CCTV or even this thread) then he could be in even worse trouble.

Don’t forget, that despite the written error, the ticket was attached to the correct car.

I definitely wouldn't go down the route of lying and say I didn't get it.

I think I will email the council anon and see what they say.

Emailed the following to the council earlier:

Hi,

The following PCN reference XX was attached to my car.

The registration on the PCN is XX which does not belong to my car. It appears the traffic warden mistyped the last 2 digits.

Needless to say, I cannot pay nor challenge a PCN using a registration that is not mine.

I consider this PCN invalid, however please can you advise.

2 hours later received the following reply:

I am pleased to inform you that I have accepted your explanation in response to the Penalty Charge Notice detailed above.

This PCN has been issued incorrectly under the wrong registration number, and as such has been cancelled.
You have my apologies for any inconvenience caused.

However, the original PCN was issued because your vehicle was seen to be parked in a loading bay, without loading. Please be careful regarding this issue in the future.

Most councils will fold at a simple challenge, unless they are being arsey. Our parking ticket had been in the ticket clip (Škoda feature), and the black surround (UV shield for screen adhesive) was covering the first number of the end time. We still had the ticket so we sent an image to Southend-on-Sea Council, who cancelled it with a similar ‘be careful next time’ comment.
