Moving speed van, speed measurements.

Was just driving down the A10 today, and strangely I had people flash me from the opposite site of the carriageway, wasn’t sure why but wasn’t too bothered as I was roughly at 73-74mph indicated so in reality about 71-72mph on the GPS.

I have found out why people started flashing me, as there was a moving police speed camera van on the opposite side of the road, however what’s got me confused is that I always though they had to be stationary to measure your speed as that’s what they’re designed to do, so I’m not sure why people would start flashing me warning me of it when it’s moving?

Was I wrong to think they had to be stationary? Is the technology actually that good that the van while moving can measure a different vehicles speed travelling the opposite way?

Like I said I’m not really bothered as I’m pretty convinced I wouldn’t get done for an indicated 73mph anyway, just want some clarification on them vans of what they can and can’t do these days.

Perhaps the van had been stationary when the other drivers saw it?

I doubt it as there is no space on that park of the A10 to stop really, unless it would block one of the lanes.
