No V5 but vehicle registered to me

Just a how can that be question really.

A few months ago received a letter from Beds police for a speeding issue on a vehicle that I've never owned, but was apparently registered to me. Contacted them and advised them of this and they updated their records accordingly.

Got another letter yesterday from Thames Valley Police telling me that a different vehicle, also registered to me had been seized as the driver was unlicenced and uninsured, giving me details of where to collect it from. Again, contacted them and advised.

I've also been getting letters every now and again from insurance companies where someone is trying to insure different vehicles using my details.

So, obviously someone out there is committing various frauds

What I was to work out though is, if vehicles are being registered with my details at the DVLA how come I don't receive V5's for them?

Could an unscrupulous person be accessing your mail? (E.g. do you have a postbox in a block of flats communal area?)

The insurance issue could simply be someone using a comparison site, using the post-code, but selecting a different address from the drop-down selection (because they do not wish to get the Mail).

No, just a normal house in Yorkshire.

All the offences so far have been down South so I'm assuming they've randomly got my name and address from somewhere.

The bank details they have on the insurance are nothing like mine so no issue of money going out or anything.

I guess they get at least a week of free insurance each time though as it takes that long for the letters to arrive and for me to then inform the insurance company that it is fraudulent.

It sounds as if you may be the victim of identity theft. I hope it doesn't escalate beyond the fairly minor irritations you've had so far. I'm not sure how you could go about recording these instances, but it may be worth while in case it does become serious.

Agreed, I've been keeping copies of everything so far just in case.

At least the insurance companies seem to be on the ball so far anyway.

I guess it's pretty easy to get a name and address and I assume the perp has bought stolen credit card details. But as you say, why have the V5s not come to you?

No credit card details lost so they don't have any of those details. The Insurance docs that come through to me show bank account and sort code details that aren't mine so not sure if they have someone else's for those or are just choosing random ones. So financially nothing lost.

Was more interested in the V5's really, still unsure why if the police/dvla records show the vehicle(s) are registered to me why I'm not getting the paperwork through.

Just waiting for something decent to get seized and I'll go and collect it ;-)
