I can’t find the V5C anywhere. My tax is up on 31/10 and I can’t renew it owing to no MoT (as the engine is currently being rebuilt). I can’t SORN the car owing to not finding the V5C. I don’t receive V111s as it was taxed via DD. I rang the DVLA today to sort it as I always assumed calling the people responsible for vehicle registrations would cost me half an hour waiting for someone to answer but they could sort it for me. They said they can’t but they could send me a new logbook for £25. They also said I will probably get an £80 fine for having an untaxed car.
Dad has said how much he likes the car and offered a strong bid of a pound. If I write to the DVLA with all the details of the new keeper, recorded delivery to show it being sent prior to 1/11, am I in the clear?
ETA insurance faffing probably negates the potential benefits

The DVLA will require a V5c to be completed for a transfer of ownership, normally. However, V5c documents are regularly lost (somehow...), I often see cars for sale at auction with no V5c. A new owner can fill in the application form for a new V5c and pay the £25.
I would suggest you do that if you fully intend to sell it. As for getting a fine, it won't be immediate. If the VED ran out 30th Sept, you should just get a red letter first. If it runs out on Sunday (31st Oct), there's time to get a replacement V5c and then declare it SORN before any fines arrive.

Cheers. I’ll do it tonight and email them to explain. Absolutely stunned by inability of department with responsibility for registering vehicles to be unable to deal with a matter regarding a vehicle registration, I’d been putting it off as I was that sure it was a straightforward job when I called them.

Yes, misplacing V5C is silly but inability of DVLA to help has astounded me. I’ll pay £25 for another but I’m understandably reluctant to pay an £80 fine. Especially on a car I’ve been taxing since February to not drive
