Could anyone enlighten me as to why this response would be made after a DVLA search?

As allowed on the Government DVLA search facility. Done on the registration number.

There is no registered keeper on record for that vehicle.

We used to get it quite often (as in up to 25% of the enquiries we made) and the DVLA would still charge us for telling us that their record keeping was appalling.

ETA: we used KADOE rather than individual enquiries

You get a similar response if the registration number is on retention.

Perhaps the vehicle has never been on the DVLA computer as was the case with my car.

I think you'll find that's not a computer, but a unique hybrid: it's an 026 Card Punch and Summary Punch and Interpreter combined. It's slower than a dedicated Summary Punch (18 columns per second = 15 cards per minute) but it prints as it punches and it doubles as a key punch.

And used extensively to explain jokes.

Yes, but are the DVLA aware of it's shortcomings, as regard speed, or is it just down to financial considerations?

As jokes go it was hardly worth it posting.

I know of someone else, with a classic car that had no previous registered owner, as it was ‘parked up’ before the current database was created.

I think it must have just been loads of paper files for a long time.

All registration records are held on microfiche - only current keeper details are held on the computer - I assume they are weeded at some stage

I don't think that is the case. The very old records were moved to microfiche, certainly.

They will be archived at some point but data storage of such a small amount fo data is unlikely to be an issue for modern systems.

I saw one FOI that said they were kept until the vehicle was flagged as destroyed. Another FOI said that there were some "live" records that were archived over concerns over space in the 1990s.

Agreed - there must be a cutoff date from the point where changes of ownership were no longer carried out on paper

Local DVLA had no records of my 1972 Mk3 cortina in 2001. The car was laid up in the late 70s but luckily i had the old green logbook. The worry for a couple of minutes was when the lady said she would go away and check that the number hadn't been used. She came back with a smile saying i could have the number, which was a great relief as the car is a very rare one. smile

That isn't a 026 !

It's the virtually identical looking 526 - you can tell these by looking at the interfaces to over IBM devices OR by reading the 526 written on the front
