Taxing a vehicle for a couple of months
Discussion
My understanding is that you'll need to SORN your vehicle when you no longer want it taxed, and if at that point you have unused months of tax paid for you will get a refund of them (but only in whole months).
If you only want to use it for 2-3 months, I'd pay for 6 months and SORN when you want to.

It seems to me that there are 2 options, 6 or 12 months, but is there anything to stop me setting up a DD for 12 monthly payments and cancelling after 8?
Or will I have a vehicle that is taxed for 12 with 3 missing payments?
TIA
No just set up the DD and cancel when you sorn the vehicle or sell itOr will I have a vehicle that is taxed for 12 with 3 missing payments?

Pay monthly by DD and put on SORN on the last day of the month if that works out ok for timing.
You are not then owed any refund, and you don't pay for what you don't use. Take off SORN again at the start of the month you wish to use it again.
You could do this one month taxed, one month SORN if you wanted to, all on monthly DD. All done online in an instant.
You will just need to have valid insurance and MOT.
Whether the DVLA would query this if you continued to do it long term who knows.
The one downside is you do pay a bit extra for the benefit of paying monthly.
