This isn't that smart of a way of tracking a car... Basically if you have an iPhone and someone pops one of these on your car you will very quickly get an alert

The Apple AirTags make a regular alert sound when out of range of the hosts phone for long periods of time anyway, but there are plenty of other 'tags' that could be used for this nefarious purpose
We've been looking into this for UK law enforcement after a few unsubstantiated reports online of air tags being placed on people by offenders. If the air tag is out of range of the host phone for a set time it begins to make a noise. Equally, if an air tag that is unknown to your iPhone starts to move with you, your iPhone will notify you of the unknown air tag.
It's definitely plausible but in using this tactic the offender would be in the hope the victim or anyone with them doesn't have an iPhone or any apple device. That seems a huge slice of the population ruled out and when, as mentioned above, a better, more accurate tracker which doesn't need to be linked to the offender's own apple ID can be purchased for the same price it makes the use of air tags much less beneficial.
I'm sure they'll still be used though and Facebook local groups will be awash with warnings from fumin' Debbie with the asymmetric hair about how dangerous they are.

Precisely that. I appreciate it's an official Canadian source but it will get manipulated into one of those simple garbage clickbait stories that the typical Facebook idiot laps up and shares. Click on them and your screen will be raped with adverts and more 'articles' This kind of thing...

Interestingly I read about a case in the US where a law enforcement agency placed a tracker on a suspects car. A few days later the tracker disappeared or stopped responding. The suspect then was arrested for stealing the tracker !! How dare you stop us spying on you.
