Advice regarding jury service please

I received a letter just after Christmas informing me I have been selected for jury service in February of this year.
It is not convenient for me to do so, as it would require me to shut my small Ltd company for two weeks.
I applied to be excused, and despite explaining that we are a two man company and my friend and business partner suffered a stroke on 30th June 2021 my application has been refused.
It would appear that I am being 'ordered' to attend, and I don't wish to.
Does anyone have experience of this stuff please ?
Apparently I can appeal and will do so tomorrow.
Quite where these people get this authority to tell me in less than a month I must close my business for two weeks, just to suit them, I am unsure of.

Looks like you are going to have to suck it up.
I've done it, it's important, you will be part of the judicial system in this country, if you were a defendant would you want only people who want to be jurors or a fair and honest mix of all types of people?
The case I sat on was pretty heavy and involved someone going to prison for over a decade.
I was due to go into a people trafficking case but the judge laid out that it was expected to run into 3 weeks and if anyone couldn't commit to that then please excuse yourself.

I thought I had, in fact I know I did as I have a copy.I will appeal today.
I've been excused from jury service twice over the past 15 years or so. I'm self employed so if I'm not working, I don't get paid, end of story. I requested a couple of my clients supplied brief letters explaining my role to their businesses as I play a support role to them (website development, hosting & support).
Whilst I understand the need for jury service, there are of course a great many people where it simply isn't suitable. My wife got called up and found it interesting but for me personally it's a non-starter.

I haven't had one since June 30th 2021, including Christmas......I just got the Saturday and Sunday off, as in our line of work some factories are still open, and the ones that are closed do maintenance during shut down.I do have the odd free day, I just think it is unreasonable to expect me to shut my business for two weeks at the whim of the judiciary.

I just thought I'd reply as I had a good reason to be excused, I actually now wish I'd thought of that given their attitude so far.
I was due to do Jury service starting on 4th Jan but had an email over xmas telling me not to attend as it was postponed, then another email a day later saying my jury service was now considered complete and that they wouldn't be calling me.
Pity, i was quite looking forward to it. It's always a serious case if its a Crown Court - anything that would attract a sentence of less than 3 years (i think) is done at a magistrates court.
