I know that entry into a new speed limit is by circular red signs with a number in the middle, 1 on each side of the road, but sometimes these are preceeded by exactly the same but with a '200 yds ahead' or similar sign written underneath.
I take it then, that by the letter of the law these countdown signs actually negate the speed limit signs written above them?

Seems like a daft question I know, but just wondered.

Quiet correct in saying that a Speed limit has to be signed. The signs will take effect at the point where the limit starts in accordance with the Order.

As far as I am aware the "30 - 100 yards ahead' are permitted as they too show where the limit starts and effectively sign the start of the limit.

ah,

so even if the '100 yds' etc things fell off, the speed limit wouldn't apply until you get to the point where the order says it should?

Do they actually state the position to within x meters on the order, or just say 'on a road called'?

.....at a point XXXX yards south of the junction with ...Road.. to a point XXXX yards from...

Read the Public Notices section of your local paper and you will come across then as they are applied for.

I really like the /// // / signs that are starting to appear. Helps give a bit of extra warning on the twisties.

I think these signs are a waste of time.

Most 30 limits now start about half a mile from the village they are intended for anyway. If you need warning about an impending speed limit change so that you can slow down in time then you're driving too fast for the conditions.

I disagree - 'round these parts they seem to be fairly sensibly (IMO) putting in /// // / markers rather than moving the 30 zones further out.

I take it you've never gone around a bend in a 60 NSL at more than 30mph in case the limit changes just aroud the corner?

Yes I think the advance warning of the start of a 30 mph limit can sometimes be helpful, but in most cases we manage quite well without them IMHO.

The things I really detest though are the damned rumble strips on the road surface, as if our roads are not already rough enough. Traffic calming hogwash!

Best wishes all,
Dave.

If I can't see round a corner then I slow down. There could be at lot worse than 30mph signs around a blind corner.

...but you won't have a frigging clue what road they're actually talking about, as they deliberately write them in the most obscure language possible, use road names that nobody knows or worse C-road numbers, and never provide a map. You'd almost think they didn't want you to know what they were doing...
