State Pensions in uk are usually paid 4 weekly in arrears. Overpayments usually occur from delays in informing dwp of death.

In both my parent's cases it was paid in advance and despite registering the deaths promptly, I had to make repayments of their state pension.

I'm pretty sure my late mother's was paid in arrears.

But as I understand it DWP may ask for it back, but you aren't under any obligation to give it back. Wasn't an issue for me as they didn't ask for any back because they were told promptly.

'The basic State Pension is usually paid every 4 weeks into an account of your choice. You’re paid ‘in arrears’, which means you’re paid for the last 4 weeks, not for the coming 4 weeks.

There are different rules if you live abroad'

Updated this morning on BBC news. Looks like he might have died in the PO. Foul play ruled out. Apologies but the story has now disappeared from the news page.

There is an option to have it paid weekly in advance.

When DWP asked for the repayment, approx 6 month's after each of my parent's death it wasn't optional smile

It wasn't just the state pension but also their attendance allowance.

These days the DWP are notified as soon as the death is registered therefore its hard not be prompt with notification.
