Issue with "BMW approved used" purchase.
Discussion
My friend rang me today with a problem so I said I'd ask on here.
Sorry if this is the wrong section.
He has bought a 2015 M4 from a large BMW dealer in the Midlands / North.
It was advertised for 32,000, with 23k miles.
It was advertised as approved used.
He has pictures of the advert.
He bought the car, was fine with the transaction but at one point the salesman told him words to the effect of "oh we can't sell it for approved used as it was late on a service (time not miles) but we will still honour the warranty etc and the car is " <Brand of dealer> Select Plus model". But he has no paperwork of this discussion.
My friend asked is this still the BMW warranty and the salesman said yes (apparently, I wasn't there but no reason to doubt him).
Now a few weeks after purchasing (end of Jan 2022 was the purchase) it has an issue which he called his local dealer to find out its not under any BMW Warranty at which point and only after contacting the dealer, it is actually under a <Brand of dealer> select warranty, which is underwriten by "Car Care Plan".
The issue my friend (and I) see with this that the terms of the original purchase were not honored as the car has a 3rd party warranty, not an official BMW one as discussed with the dealer (whether through approved used or the BMW Insured warranty) and worryingly the local dealer seems to say he has to pay for work upfront and then claim back from the dealer.
The potential problem is turbo (white smoke which appears common in M3/M4) so I would imagine rather costly to fix.
The other concern is that after looking up the policy online, the warranty only has a £4,000 single claim limit which I guess on an M4 is not very much so if the engine fails as an example my friend is left in a very bad situation.
I said to my friend when he called me, what he wanted to happen.
He said he loves the car but wants a BMW warranty on it rather than a third party one put on the car - Or to be refunded the money to purchase the proper BMW insured warranty (which is around £1500).
He said had he known the car did not have a proper BMW warranty he wouldn't have bought it originally as he could have found a car privately for less and then paid for the warranty from Allianz.
Does anyone have any suggestions of how to handle this problem?

Yes, bought less than 30 days ago and now has a fault. Warranty provision presumably not as advertised in that ad. he has a copy of...It was advertised as approved used.

Don't mess about - just reject it now and go from there.
If the situation is as described then it is never going to get the BMW warranty he thought he was buying. If this is important, then only one solution.
Sounds like the BMW approved used warranty wouldn’t cover it due to the service, I suspect what he has is equivelant to the BMW extended warranty which has a claim limit if £5k
Either way, the selling dealer is liable if this occurred within 6 months of purchase, phone them up and ask them to collect and repair

tner elect?
Here is the original advert.
tner elect?I've blanked out the name of the dealer.
As you can see on the number plate it says BMW approved used.
He loves the car and has a great spec and I spotted it had PPF when he brought it round so doesn't want to reject it but just wants the BMW Insured warranty not the Car Care Plan one. I believe the comprehensive Insured warranty will stand up to the value of the car.
The £4000 limit seems very low on a M car.

Small point, but it doesn't say THAT car is under the BMW Approved Used scheme. It implies it with a number plate cover saying "BMW Approved Used Cars" but not quite the same thing.I've blanked out the name of the dealer.

Again, don't mess about - reject now before the 30 day limit makes things more difficult.
In theory, once that is in, he may be able to go from there and accept it if BMW will give him the warranty cover - but I doubt this will happen.
[Personally, I don't see the a warranty being a deal breaker - do people expect their cars to fail expensively all the time? However, if he wants it, and thinks he has paid for it, he should get it]

I would insist on this or it goes back.

I am sure it would be to everyone else. The warranty is a deal breaker. The buyer will have paid a premium for an approved used car to get a proper warranty. A £4000 limit is nowhere near enough if something does fail.
When the current owner comes to sell the car many buyers will be put off by the incorrect service history.
That dealer network pull stunts like this all too often.
I had a Car Care Plan warranty, probably from the same dealer, after my AUC warranty ran out.
Although mine was identical to the BMW insured warranty (zero excess, full Euro breakdown cover, any claim up to the value of the car) to the extent that BMW Insured Warranty considered it as good as the AUC when it came to renew with them (cheaper renewal rate).
I wouldn't touch one with a £4k limit though and I expect you wouldn't get a BMW Insured Warranty if that car has missed a crucial service.

What service wasn't done on time?
Anyone looking to buy an M car is told to make sure the running in service isn't late or missed.
He's just sent me pics from the iDrive. Anyone looking to buy an M car is told to make sure the running in service isn't late or missed.
The history is as follows
02.09.2015 - 1617
03.05.2017 - 8381
05.03.2018 - 10800
25.01.2022 - 23743
27.01.2022 - 23748
He picked it up 28/29 Jan sometime.
I don't see a problem personally other than the 4 years between 2018 and 2022, although milage is still low here.
As a result of some advice I suggested he ask the dealer to put BMW insured warranty as a first option, or raise the claim limit to match vehicle value, and confirm any faults found with the turbos at the upcoming appointment with his local dealer are being paid for directly by them as they are not covered by the Select Warranty.
When he updates me I'll share the (hopefully good) news.
I told him you guys said about rejection and he said he "really wants to avoid that if he can" as he is smitten with the car otherwise. But that's up to him, I would probably just reject it if it were me but I'm a lot less patient than he

So basically the car fell into the hands of someone who ragged the hell out of it for 10,000 miles over 4 years, they bought it cheap from auction and tried to flip it for fat cash under the impression that it was approved. A 4 year gap in service history is a big no no for me.
I'm not sure how you can quite draw that conclusion. Modern BMWs have condition based servicing and it's quite possible the missed service was due in 2020, right in the middle of COVID. I think what's odder is it being serviced at 8300 miles in 2017 and then 1500 miles and 10 months later again.carl_w said:

Thats the fun of condition based servicing. You can be in for an oil change then be back a few months later for brake fluid, pads or an inspection service.
Not every service recorded on the idrive is an oil service.
How many of them have oil changes ? At least one of the dates mentioned won’t be oil.
I understand that these cars are clocked quite frequently, an M car not being serviced for 4 years is utterly moronic and is no doubt why it now has turbo issues.
Either that, or it has been serviced but may have been clocked so the records thrown away. Or even worse it did more miles in those 4 years without a service.
I would definitely be rejecting it .
