Disabled bay markings

I parked in a disabled bay by mistake and got a ticket, there was nothing painted on the road to indicate it disabled purely a sign with a little disabled notice approx 7ft high. It was on street parking and only disabled bay. Does it have to be marked on the road as disabled to be enforceable or is the small sign enough?

Small sign is all that's needed, anything painted on the road is advisory.

I don't know of the top of my head, what do the regulations state (I'm sure they are online)

Sounds like you were unfortunately caught out, I would probably just pay and move on, but if you can get out of it on the technicality then I wish you luck (seriously!)

OP, post a pic (or Google Street view) of where it happened.

The responses could be a useful barometer of whether or not it's worth appealing; if a significant number of people say "well that's not adequately signed, what a swizz" it might be worth it. If you face a barrage of "How did you miss that? I didn't think blind people were allowed to drive" then you know it isn't.

AFAIK signs show the conditions of parking e.g. duration, return times, days of week, disabled etc. etc. I see cars being ticketed several times a week after drivers fail to look at the signs and assume a parking bay on the road means 'forever', 'anytime you like', 'drive round the block and park again'.

I'm just going to pay it went back and disabled is painted to side but very faded / covered with leafs, I feel a bit of an idiot as the space in front that wasn't disabled was empty could of parked there.

These kinds of things really annoy me. It shouldn’t take effort to NOT break the law. When you have massively over complex clean air zones, stupid amounts of signage that are impossible to read whilst driving and watching out for the next kamikaze pedestrian or cyclist who are now "empowered" to do whatever they want. It makes staying within the law and not getting fined really quite difficult. Especially if you are not from the area.

Which to most people doesn't require a tremendous amount of effort. In the OP's case, he genuinely didn't believe he was inconveniencing anyone, and as he's pointed out, he could have (without any special effort) simply parked one space further on, if he'd known he was.
