To the HGV that was tailgating me. What did you achieve?

I was driving through a 50mph limit, surprisingly at 50 mph. The HGV behind me then decides to drive 1 metre from my rear bumper.
A mile later, this road ends in a large multi lane roundabout with a 70mph dual carriageway on one of the exits. Where the HGV obviously didn’t have the acceleration to keep up and would have hit its limiter on the dual carriageway.
What did you achieve when by the time I got to the roundabout, there’s no chance that I’m holding you up?

I had this s
t through road works on the m6 Southbound just south of the M58, the other week, in the dark. In the pouring rain. I'm in the middle lane, doing 53 mph according to my Sat Nav. Overtaking cars in the inside lane. Cars which are too close for me to attempt to move lanes to sandwich myself in the gap and perhaps slow down to 45 mph. I can't move to.theboutside lane, where cars are doing about 54 mph and quite frankly arecway too close to each other. So what goes through the mind of driver of a truck, to get so close to my bumper that I can see the headlights in each door mirror but not in the central mirror. What make him think it's a good idea to put his full beam on.
Shall I speed up? Well it is average speed cameras so I'd probably be okay at 55 mph right ?
Shall I break check him? I quite like my rear bumper the shape it is and I don't want to be crushed to death by a nutter.
Shall I continue as is ? Well he's not really g it the message.
I click.the cruise control down one mph. Wait 10 seconds, and again. I repeat this until I'm doing the same speed as the cars to.my left, yes 45 mph and then I start indicating left. But there nowhere for me to go as I'm level with a car.
Horn, flashing lights. You can fk off. 3 fking inches from my boot. A few minutes later at 45 mph I catch up.with a car in the middle lane, I stick my right indicator on, accelerate into.a small gap in the outside lane. A bit smaller than I'd like, but bigger than your average Audi driver needs at 100.
Past the slower car in the middle lane, back into.the middle lane, set the cruise to 53, and watch him.doung the same to the next guy in my rear view mirror.

Yep, very glad I don't commute via motorway, fking hate the average camera sections through roadworks. You either have to suck it up and do 40-45 in the left hand lane, deal with "professional drivers" tailgating you because they believe 55-60 is ok, or risk your licence by driving in the knob lane...
Limit should really be 10mph lower for HGV's in these sections, I reckon it would help traffic flow more smoothly and increase safety. Admittedly I've only given it 30 seconds thought so there may be reasons why that wouldn't be a good idea

They want to sit on the limiter regardless, as they won’t be prosecuted. It’s just another example of a ‘professional’ driver, who should know better. Unfortunately, having had a peek into the industry over the last few years, there do seem to be quite a few throbbers and bottom feeders piloting them.

Yup, it's all about the limiter. A wagon will do 56(ish) with the driver sat in it with his foot flat to the floor, and of course 56 happens to be just about what you'll get away with in a 50 average limit without getting pinged. Some drivers - by no means all - therefore opt to sit in lane 2 blindly going 'flat out', rather then troubling themselves with having to actually pay attention and drive to the road conditions. And they persuade themselves that it's perfectly reasonable to bully anybody who fails to comply until they force them to move over. When you consider that these blokes quite literally rely on their licence to pay the bills, and the increasing popularity of dashcams etc, it's ridiculous really. Not to mention that it can't do much for your blood pressure being that stressed and wound up all the time.Edited by anonymous-user on Monday 21st March 17:22
Is often the issue with speed cameras and locals not caring to think the driver in front is not from their little piece of turf.
Get the tailgaters and even lights flashing at me depressingly often when I stick to the limit but the local, unlike me, knows the camera/usual mobile speed trap location is a mile away. There do seem to be a fair amount of drivers who, perhaps understandably, figure if they just slow down for the speed cameras then no matter how dangerously they otherwise drive, all will be fine and dandy as they won't get caught.

Yes I had that travelling down the M1 a couple of months ago.
Hit a 50mph limit, I slowed down, HGV rams to my bumper, lights flashing, on the horn, he couldn't overtake because HGVs in the second lane were steaming passed still at 65 mph.
Finally he got to overtake, still on his horn then eventually slowed to 50 mph together with the rest of the traffic

You’ll just have to sit behind me you absolute pillock.I used to finish a back shift at midnight and had to travel 20 miles home on the A75 ,just as the start of the ferry traffic was getting there , I was fuming the amount of times I had hgv s tailgating me so closely that I couldn't see their lights in my inside mirror and worse they would overtake on corners as they were speaking to other drivers on their cb radios stating no vehicles coming .
And speed they would regularly be doing 70 mph plus and it was a case of keep up or get the Feck out of the way.
I even followed one and on the corners the trailer wheels would be lifting up slightly as they were going that quickly while cutting the corners .
There was very few police doing speed checks then (10 -15 years ago)

HGVs should really be re-designed such that the driver sits in a small protruding cabin - roughly the same size as a small hatchback's front passenger cell - at normal car ride height. I doubt much tailgating would happen, then....
I've often thought whether HGV drivers would be quite so bullying out of their cab, if someone took them to task over their 'professional standards'.
