The wife has had a voicemail left on her phone, supposedly from LV, saying they're aware she's been in an accident. This allegedly took place back in February, except it didn't because she's never been to the town in question, which is across the other side of the country.

Weirdly, she also has an email from LV stating the same thing. She's not insured with LV so I don't know how they've got her email. It addresses her by Mrs X (correct name) and mentions her correct car and registration.

The phone number on the email seems to be a legit LV number, and the email looks legit.

If it's not genuine, I don't want to phone the number and open a hornets nest of nagging contact regarding something that never happened. If it's genuine, but she obviously wasn't involved in any accident, how does this get cleared up?

By phoning LV and asking them what it is about.

Well, yes. Assuming it is actually LV.

That's a lot of detail for them to have about something she knows nothing about.

We have most of our insurance with LV= - they're usually pretty sensible on the phone.

Look up LV phone number independently and call them to ask if they phoned and emailed your wife or not.
If they say they didn’t then you can ignore the voicemail and email. If they say they did you can ask about it and they will tell you.

It is very odd that presumably as a third party insurer they have personal contact information for your wife.

If someone reported an accident your insurance company would never share this, they would contact you .

Regardless of outcome ask where the contact information was shared and perhaps submit a data request.m if you’re not satisfied with the response.

The accident itself is either fraudulent (staged) with real contact info harvested to try and pursue a spurious claim or more likely, wrong reg or cloned reg (has car been for sale recently) . Doesn’t explain the contact info though.

Thanks all.

The car has not been for sale recently, she's owned it about 8 months. She has literally just transferred a different plate onto it though, so it's odd timing in that regard.

I'm waiting on the line with LV now.

This. Plus pass the (presumably fake) phone number on to them.
I would not contact the original number or email either.

Insurance companies share information all the time perfectly legally

Will they tell you anything? Unless it's Mrs. 500 that's calling

If someone cloned her plate and was in an accident the trail would lead back to your wife!!

Maybe this is the case but I’d be amazed that they would give the mobile number and email address of a customer without first contacting them themselves….

Sorry, got side tracked with a million other things.

Well, turns out the missus' insurance company is a subsidiary of LV, which she totally forgot about. I had no idea who she was insured with when I posted but she just told me it wasn't LV... The email wasn't actually direct from her insurance company either, it was from LV which I think confused things.

They've had reported that her car reversed into someone in a Tesco somewhere in Kent, somewhere we've never been. They gave someone else's name as the driver, so it seems we're in the clear and the claimant has written the reg down incorrectly.

So nothing mysterious or exciting in the end rolleyes Sorry folks.
