Police tailgating

Driving back through town this evening, quite a few police cars about on blue light runs rather unusually. One following behind me. Was followed across town (possibly a coincidence, they eventually turned off towards police station) however on one particular section of road the limit is 30mph. It's very wide and drivers frequently do 45-50mph as it does feel like a faster road.
Cruise control was set to 32mph, police car was right up my ass the entire way down the road. Couldn't even see their headlights in the rear view mirror.
Is it common for the police to egg you on into breaking the speed limit and then pulling you over for it? Surely they're not running plates for that long, and even if they were they should be able to read them from 20 metres away.

This happened to me not so long ago, 30 mph residential road at dusk I'm doing the speed limit. Right in the mirror I see this silver car approaching at speed, no siren and no light so no reason to suspect it's the plod. Cars parked right along so nowhere to pull in and if I stop he's so far up my arse I'll get rear ended so continued on for about 50m, and in about 3 cars lengths he swerves up the inside of me and away he goes hooning at about 50mph. Completely reckless.
When I get about half a mile up the road he's stopped outside a well known hostel and they've jumped out Starkey and Hutch style and got some guy by the neck up against a wall.

t part of the world near to where I live. I assume he was checking details, trying to get a closer look at who/what was in the car, finally pulling me over and asking me to confirm my name and address and explained he was just checking the car wasn't stolen, which I thanked him for as if it had then I'd have been grateful for them checking. He let me on my way after about 30 seconds.
If you're driving properly and the car is properly insured etc then why worry, just crack on.

I read it as the lights/siren were off. That would be ridiculous if the OP was asking questions about this if the car had lights/sirens on. I’d like to think people aren’t that silly

Judging by the frequency of posts about it on here, I'd say it's far from doubtful. Unless of course you just want to tell the OP he's lying/exaggerating - which is what you seem to be doing.If it's the same type of coppers that target a specific piece of road near me where a huge amount of people misinterpret the speed limit, but pose no risk to anyone, then yes, I'd totally believe they would be capable of goading people into speeding.
p.s. the road in question is a DC coming off the motorway and it's oddly a 30 (looks like it should be DC), but there is no repeater sign until it's too late. People shuffle up to 40 ish before the lanes merge to one - to overtake/filter, and the police, for years now, have sat just up from the merge point and ticketed everyone. Even the local rag ran a campaign to have another repeater sign installed but the council refuse and the police are there day in, day out. My Sister got a ticket for 32. Very hard to respect them when they play this game
Had it on the M1 a while back. Sat in lane 1 at 70 with a Police X5 stuck to my back bumper. Came off at J41 (East Ardsley, Wakefield) and took the left lane of the exit slip. They took the right lane of the exit slip and hammered past me like a corporate wker who was late for an important Power Point presentation. No emergency, they were just heading into the big police base that's just of the A650. Best thing is to just ignore them. Better thing would to have a rear dash cam and report them, though I doubt anything would come of it as traffic cops all seem to have been to the Tory school of "one rule for us, another for the plebs".
