Neighbours Recycling

Now I know there are bigger things going on in the World right now, war, cost of living etc but this is a big one.

I live at the end of a lane have three bins one of which is a blue recycle bin. It is for paper, plastic and clean cardboard fairly straight forward. Since I've been working from home I look right out the window and every week for the last year when my neighbour blue bin goes up all you hear is. clatter of glass bottles now we aren't talking one or two, it sounds like the blue bin is filled with them. Glass is supposed to be taken to the bottle bank, there is one literally around the corner. Went out to get my blue bin last week and said neighbour is standing talking to the cleansing officer while he's emptying his bin and the clatter of glasses happens again. So bin guy must be deaf or doesn't give a stuff.

So I'm going to assume all my recycling efforts are going to waste since it's now all contaminated with knobhead from next doors glass bottles

Are you sure there’s not been a change of policy at your council?

I used to have one bin for paper/card one for plastics and cans and a third for glass. Last year it all changed and now paper/card goes in one and everything else in another.

I would send an email saying pretty much what you've said here to the waste collection team of your local authority and ask for their advice.

If you're working at home next time the blue bin is emptied, can't you go and ask the 'cleansing officer' what is and isn't allowed in the blue bin?

Likewise we have 3 bins in Warwickshire and blue is for ALL reyclables

The initial assumption is that he is correct - just check your council policy?

Your council website will give you a breakdown of what is and what isn't allowed in the bin.

My neighbour takes all her bottles to the a bootle bank which is a few miles away, I've told her many times she can put them all in the recycling bag. Think it gives her something to do.

What I find more annoying is that different councils across the country have varying rules on what can and cannot be recycled and different size, shape and colour of bins!

Surely it cannot be that difficult to agree one policy to gain the economies of scale and give clarity to the public!


I guess its only an issue for those holidaying in the UK!

PS - I’d either double check the council rules and have a word OR contact the council to dob the neighbour in and let them deal with it.

issue is incorrect recycling can void a whole batch, which pretty much defeats the object

also council can fine residents for incorrect recycling - ask me how I know....

Does the bank in Bootle accept bottles ?
A neighbour at our previous house used to put some of her wine bottles into our recycling so hers didn't look so bad.

He could use private bin collection, I cant be arsed with the recycling nonsense - with private you can chuck it all in 1 bin, fantastic.

We have brown bins for recycling, glass, paper/cardboard, tins and plastic all go in it - they don't accept black plastic though...
