Approved used Mini issue
Discussion
Hi folks,
Just looking for a bit of advice on this one to see if I'm over reacting or not.
Bought a Mini Cooper SD for my wife two months ago from a Mini main dealer as an approved used car. 46K miles, 2015 model.
After 1700 miles it had a fault with the horn which necessitated a warranty claim. Booked it into the local Mini dealer who sorted it promptly under warranty. No issue at all here.
Naturally, any time it goes anywhere near a dealer they conduct a "health check" to try and sell you some stuff.
Anyway, they report that the front pads are 70% worn, again no real issue here there's miles left on them, but more concerning is they state the front discs are at 19.8mm versus an allowed minimum of 20.4mm so must be replaced. Not ideal after 1700 miles of buying as approved used.
I questioned this with the dealer we purchased from who sent me a flippant response thinking I was questioning the pads and in doing so sent me the inspection sheet from when they approved the car for sale as approved used. This shows the front discs were at the exact minimum thickness of 20.4mm when it was sold to us as an approved used car.
Am I being unreasonable in thinking this is a bit off, given it's blatantly going to be below minimum spec within a few hundred miles of being purchased. Obviously it's not a new car so I would expect an element of wear but that seems a bit close to the line for me and defeats the object of going through the approved used scheme.
Any thoughts?

I had a near identical issue with a used mini from a main dealer - in my case I had brake wear warnings showing when I picked the car up, when I got it the report showing the discs were 0.01mm above minimum thickness. I had noted it on the test drive but assumed that it would be dealt with as part of their pre delivery preparation.
The dealer actually laughed at me & said that I needed to read the small print as to what is covered in the inspections, if you read it carefully it does say what they inspect , measure etc but nowhere does it say that they will actually replace anything!
I had to get BMW HQ involved in the end but it took about 6 weeks to get them to instruct the dealer to replace the discs & pads all round.
We had the last laugh though - it went in for the turbo water pump recall & the engine seized 15 miles after picking it up. I ended up with a brand new mini with a huge discount.

Just get your favorite local garage to stick a new set of disks and pads on it, will probably cost £100- £150
Move on and enjoy the car, is it really worth the agro?
Car dealers, Main dealer or not are just shyster's.
i'd pay that amount not to have to talk to them.
No, the money really isn't the issue here. I prefer to call out poor service and push to rectify it. A few e-mails and calls isn't a hardship. If nobody bothers then they can just carry on unchecked.Move on and enjoy the car, is it really worth the agro?

Was just after a sanity check as to if people felt this reasonable or not.

Good to know, thanks. I'll see how they respond to my last mail and then pick up with BMW UK if necessary. OP - have you been given any literature that states what the "360" checks are on an approved used Mini does it mean 360 individual checks or they trying to say 360 degrees ie checked all round? . Ive looked on line and can find nothing other than:
WE VALUE YOUR PEACE OF MIND.
That is why every Approved Used MINI is given a 360 check by our MINI technicians. Only once it's passed with flying colours does it earn our tried and trusted guarantee.
In my case the document I could find stated that if a service was required within 4000 miles it would be done prior to sale.
I used this as the basis of my argument - the brakes needed servicing in my case within 1000 miles therefore they should have been done.

If they are indeed under the required minimum that Bmw set for "used approved" then I'd want them changed.
If what you've set out above is found to be true then that supplying dealer is happy to lie on their inspections.
I'd be straight onto Bmw UK for advice, and complaint if required.
Did you take Bmw finance on the car? If so, raise a quality complaint with Bmwfs. That'll get the sales managers attention.

No I’ve also really struggled to find anything myself. I might make that enquiry to bmw uk and see what they say WE VALUE YOUR PEACE OF MIND.

Certainly a learn for me, I did far less checks than I usually would when buying a used car due to it being approved used. Clearly this was an error

Alas no finance, it was an outright purchase but I’ll get onto bmw uk and see how I get on.
Quite a 50/50 response. Appreciate everyone’s input.
I’ll give the dealer a chance to respond and escalate to BMW UK but wont burn too much time on it. Obviously I will be doing the discs and pads.
Will certainly not be buying from that dealership group again either way and will check any AUC just as carefully as I would a private sale going forwards

They haven't worn .6mm in 1700 miles unless they were all round Silverstone. I'd feel the same as you.

PS other suitable race circuits are available
I'm with Bert. You've not worn 0.6mm in 1700 miles. Bert

You still shouldn't expect an AUC car to be sold with the discs at the exact minimum thickness. It's something I've seen a number of times including trying to sell me a car with discs 1mm under minimum thickness.

The OP tells us that the brake discs were right on the minimum level when sold - not under it. They are under it now after he's driven for a while. If what you've set out above is found to be true then that supplying dealer is happy to lie on their inspections.
I don't think that lies have been told, rather the question is should an AU car have a level of tolerance built into its consumables, and if so, how much

I reported them to BMW for trying to sell me a car with discs 1mm under minimum thickness. BMW were not interested and said it was up to the dealer if they followed AUC standards or not.
