What should my nephew expect?

3 days after removing his black box he had a brain fart and got papped doing 55 in a 40, he’s had the NIP letter and he’s going admit fault, he’s 19, been driving a year and had no issues till now… he’s obviously worried about what the damage is going to be. What should he expect? (Besides grief from his parents)
Speed Awareness Courses have nothing to do with first offences and are still offered if someone has 9 points on their licence so long as they meet the eligibility criteria. These are that (1) the alleged offence happened in England or Wales, (2) that the offender hasn't done a SAC in the last 3 years, and (3) that the speed was within limit + 10% + 9mph. This means that in a 40 you can get an SAC up to 53mph.
Band A only applies if the case goes to court and is utterly irrelevant otherwise. 55 in a 40 is going to be a fixed penalty of £100 and 3 points.
He needs to be aware that until he has had a licence for 2 years another 3 points mean that his licence will be revoked and he would need to apply for a new provisional and pass the theory and practical tests again.

I got nabbed at 56 in a 40 limit probably 3 years ago and got the above, no idea if first offence, etc helps or hinders but he shouldn't be hoping for a course and assumes he doesn't want his day in court.Edited by Freshprince on Saturday 28th May 17:10
When is the black box going back in? The insurance company will also want to punish him so it is a double whammy.

His insurers may well hike his premium when he renews, as under 25 male with fnp in a red ring will increase his risk a fair bit, average premium for just 3 points its 5%.

Could you point us to the source of your statistic please? We often debate the effect of convictions on premiums and it looks like you have access to some actual data on the matter.As said its a fixed penlty 3 pts 100 fine.

The OP's nephew should check the policy wording about when he has to declare the points, it could be when they are received or only at renewal time.
Thanks for the comments, I’ve directed him towards this thread so he can review, he’s expecting points and a fine and will be driving like an angel to protect his licence, he’s a good driver normally but was just a moment of absent mindedness, I did it not long after passing my test in 94 and got 3 points too, made me a more conscious of speed and the consequences for sure

A fixed penalty is available up to 65 mph and is completely unrelated to the imposition of a band A fine during court proceedings. May also get offered a SAC as first offence, but depends on local force iirc.

SAC eligibility does not depend on the absence or otherwise of endorsements.
Course would usually available up to and including 53 mph.
