Towing - maximum allowable load width..

I've got to move some timber, and to get it all on the trailer it'll end up being 2.8m wide.

Is this legal?

All I can find is that the allowable trailer width is 2.55m, but nothing about the load width. As the total width is still less than an HGV, it'll fit down all the roads I'll be travelling on, but is it legal?

How wide is the trailer you will be using and what is the size of the overhang on each side?

1.8m wide trailer, 500mm overhang either side.

Weight wise its absolutely fine, well within limits, but not sure on width.

On the otherhand, given the lack of plod on the road these days, even if it is "illegal", whats the realistic likelihood of getting caught on an hours journey?
