Hi folks.

I woke up this morning to find my motor clamped.
I recently moved house and forgot to change address on log book therefore missing tax renewal.
My own silly fault but can anyone tell me how much the fine will be?
I've paid £100 release and taxed my car £30 per year. I've been running since April without tax.

Thanks in advance.

That is unfortunate, and another victim of the decision to get rid of a visual aid (the tax disc). frown To be fair, they'd have sent a 'red' tax overdue letter to your old address too, shame they weren't forwarded on.

Changing the address on a V5c was not high on your list I expect. There are online places that will remind you if you enter your details. It's normally the MoT people forget because there is no reminder for that. Don't forget your licence too!

I'm sure there'll be someone along to tell you your insurance was invalid. rolleyes

You can get a text reminder?

OP, did you remember to tell your insurers?

You can set up a VED reminder by E-mail. Who needs a tax disc. I would prefer to see an insurance disc, à la France (if that is still the case, though I guess that is open to abuse).

Yes you can opt for a txt reminder about the MoT. I meant that it's not official policy like VED, it's optional:

Post redirection, cant say I've ever moved without doing it for a minimum of 6 months, saves a lot of potential hassle

Well tax and MOT have nothing to do with insurance, and vice versa.

I don't believe that insurance is invalidated by having no road tax (or a vehicle being Sorned for that matter). I can't recall ever being asked to confirm that my car has valid tax and/or MOT before taking out a policy, nor have I ever come across it in the policy wording that it is a condition that the car has either/both of the same.

Quite possible to want to insure your car whilst it's off the road and parked on a driveway for example.

On the other hand, it is possible that not notifying the insurers of a change of address can invalidate the policy. Postcodes are a massive influence on policy pricing and availability. Plus one can't expect an insurer to pay out if your usual residence is still your old address and something happened to your car at your new address not on record.

The risk is that insurers can take a strict approaches where invalid or inaccurate information is provided or maintained and proceed to cancel the policy. That then leads to all sorts of problems as insurers share information with one another and some are part of the same group, so having to declare you've had your insurance declined or cancelled in the last X years may lead to it being difficult or very costly to get insurance from elsewhere (brokers come in useful in such situations).

The other issue the OP needs to be alert to is the fact that he only paid a release fee to a private company. The actual offence itself is something else completely separate and the OP needs to be on guard for court papers that may come through from the Magistrates Court basically demanding the applicable fine itself to be paid.

Thanks for your replies all.
Fortunately I'm up to date with insurance and MOTs.

So just to be clear I'm looking at around an £80 fine halved if paid straight away?

I did read it's 5x anual tax or a £1000 fine, whichever is greater. Given my annual tax is £30 I'm more than a little anxious.

Yes, a list for house moves (car stuff is high up there). Then a postal redirect for a minimum of a year. E-mails to anyone you can think of.
