Friend took car without my knowledge
Discussion
My 18 year old left his car at his friends house while they went out . The friend went back early and decided to take the car out with 3 passengers.
We then got a warning 3 days later from the insurance black box for speeding 41 in a 30 .
We now know that this is TWOC but don’t want to go that route (yes very stupid and devious kids but luckily they are still alive )
My worry is that we will get a speeding ticket . My son will obviously give the friends details but will there be any ramifications for my son if the police look into this as the friend didn’t have insurance for my sons car and we haven’t reported it
Should we report this to the police now or wait to see if we get a ticket ?

This happened to me a few years ago.
"Friend" took my car on a little joyride while I was on holiday and they were supposedly just collecting the post and putting the bins out.
I got a couple of speeding tickets and a parking fine after I got home.
I did the online thing with the speeding tickets advising of an unknown driver etc.
I was then summoned to court to reaffirm my claim in front of a magistrate.
After that I never heard anything again from the police, the courts or the "friend".

Can't understand why it hasn't been reported to the police already. Idiots unchallenged just go on causing trouble for others. We then got a warning 3 days later from the insurance black box for speeding 41 in a 30 .

How did the "friend" get hold of your son's car keys?We then got a warning 3 days later from the insurance black box for speeding 41 in a 30 .

It's only a decision your son can make - take the 3 points for the sake of the friendship or complete the S172 with his mate's details if and when it arrives.
FWIW unless he was hooning it around all night I'd say the chances of getting a ticket are small.

The boys were celebrating getting their A levels . Pre drinks at said friends house then out clubbing . My husband told my son not to take his keys out with him . Said friend decided not to go out clubbing but wanted a McDonald’s.
Said friends Mum had taken his keys off him , there are speed cameras on the stretch of road used .
I don’t want to ruin the prospects of the kids who took / got in the car l just want to make sure my son won’t be impacted in any way..

I think you're a fool for not reporting it as twok...and you're opening up a world of trouble.
However if you're happy being shagged through your trousers for the criminal actions of someone else, crack on!
I wouldn't be protecting a criminal!
This. Once you start a lie, more lies have to follow until you are too deep in - possibly ending with a perverting the course of justice. However if you're happy being shagged through your trousers for the criminal actions of someone else, crack on!

Did you not tell him, as every parent should ‘beware, your lies will find you out!’
Clearly the insurance will want confirmation that your son was driving.
Will he be taking the rap?
If not, will he say who was driving to his insurance company? The insurance company’s next question will be, who was driving, and were they insured? His insurance could well be cancelled, and a marker against him.
Your/his next step had better be well thought through.

If there is a speeding ticket, if your son correctly names the actual driver (no ambiguity, no messing about - a straight forward nomination) and then in turn once his "friend" receives his own NIP he correctly fills it in, accepting responsibility, confirming he was the driver at the time, then said person should just get whatever fine/points are coming to them - it is unlikely any further investigation would be done into insurance etc.
However, any messing about during what should be a straight forward process, that is when the police love an investigation and that is when things like no insurance crop up - then you have the decision of "Permitting an uninsured to drive" or "TWOC".

To be blunt, I think you'd be doing society a favour by reporting to the police. Speeding and driving without insurance should be a good starter for 10.
I'd speak to him, get him to map out the roads they took then drive them yourself to check for speed cameras, red light cameras etc. If none on the route, very low chances of a fine I'd say.
On the insurance - you say they have given a warning, what is in the terms and conditions re that? I mean, do they see it as an offence and one they will use to up your premium no matter what level of involvement from the police?
On whether or not to punish him, that has to be up to you. You know your son best and if the fear of what could have happened is enough to change his attitude.

My son won’t be taking the rap that’s why I’ve posted, to get advice on the situation of a speeding ticket if one appears.
Will the form the said friend might get as a result of my son giving his details as the driver ,ask if he has insurance on the vehicle involved ?
Has anybody had one of these forms where you are the driver but not the keeper of a car
