Not sure if right place for my question, but this is it.
On an NSL dual, carriageway a temporary 50 sign is put up, one of those on a flimsy framework.
100 yards further on is a roundal, or what you call those repeater fixed signs saying NSL.
Now about a mile further on is a temporary NSL sign.
So it looks like it was 50 between temporary 50 sign and the temporary NSL.
Shouldn’t they have covered the NSL repeaters, or is legal to interpret the first repeater NSL just past the temporary 50 and assume it’s back to NSL.
Incidentally no apparent reason for the speed restrictions, no cones, no sign of any ongoing works, not unusual though.

Similar in the M6 roadworks. Gantry signs turned on because of traffic showing lower limits than temporary (fixed display) roadworks signs.
e.g. Roadworks 60, gantry 50, roadworks 60, gantry 50, roadworks 60, gantry 40, roadworks NSL, gantry 60. Or similar.
With consideration, the intent can be deduced, but the reality is somewhat confusing.

Temp road signs cancel out the permanent ones whilst in place.
Gantry signs with a red circle around them are mandatory, similar to red X's, you risk prosecution for not obeying them, however, gantry speeds without the red circle are not mandatory, but advisable, and would be used in evidence should you be involved in an incident.

Something I've often wondered; on a 'smart' m-way with a lower speed limit displayed on the gantries, sometimes the cessation of that lower limit is clearly indicated by the NSL roundels being displayed on the next gantry, however sometimes/often the next gantry displays nothing and the limit just 'disappears'.
Is it the case that that technically the lower limit remains in force until an NSL/something else is displayed to replace it, or does the lower limit cease to apply simply by its absence (i.e. gantries not lit)?

So getting back to my question, should I have kept to 50 regardless of NSL repeaters till I reached the temporary NSL. Where there was gantry signs I would stick to them.
So many times I pass temporary speed limits with sod all going on, and no NSL in sight. The other week driving north out of Dundee there was a temporary 30, dual carriageway, result an irritated HGV right up my rear end flashing and tooting, on lane 2 everything was doing 70, and again no NSL at the end of the invisible road works

I would bet that a Temp 50 followed by an uncovered NSL repeater is not enforceable as a 50 limit.
This, but if I was taking that argument ‘legal’ for any reason I’d certainly want dashcam footage showing the uncovered repeater! I didn’t and I am a driving god…..

I had a great argument with highways about this a few years back but it was gantry signs all being different above different lanes.
50 | NSL | 40 | 50 for example going from Lane 1 to 4.
They confirmed it was faulty but would not say what the actual speed limit was.
Had another one where a 40 mph average had some 20 mph sections and I complained as I was doing 20 and getting abused by people wanting to do 40. I complained to the council and they went and covered all the 40 signs so it was 20. Then when the roadworks were complete they never uncovered the 40 signs.
Got to love roadsigns!

Same here after the Aberdeen by pass was finished, the access road used by trucks all day was repaired, road being closed, this road was the only access to very nice pub/restaurant.50 | NSL | 40 | 50 for example going from Lane 1 to 4.

After seeing no activity for a while I cycled down it, all finished apart from a rather heavy drain which had been left on the grass verge when they replaced it, so I layed the road sign down, and emailed the council.
They said thank you, (so they knew it was open), I explained even with a pic where this big yellow backed road sign was left by me.
A week later I got another email, they couldn’t find it…………..so another email plus same picture and they managed to find it.
On the subject of signage driving back from our annual jaunt from London, looking forward to a break at Hamilton services.
On approach there was road works and the M74 northbound split, took a chance and stayed in L1.
Luckily it passed the turnoff for Hamilton services.
How easy would it have been to show that L1 passed Hamilton services for those like me who didn’t know.
