what was this item fixed to a police car?

passed a police car in a spot where ive seen a proper camera van before , got me wondering what this was - estate car and it had a small black metal boxes about the size of a rubix cube fixed to the back two corners roof pointing backwards
they dont operate cameras like this do they ? pretty sure i was within the limits but im a worrier, was a suffolk car

Even though you may have fully paid VED, insurance, MOT, car is in perfect condition etc, you I still feel uncomfortable with those ANPR cameras. What if the DVLA haven't taken my annual direct debit, what if the MOT didn't upload, what if my new Insurer didn't update the MID database?

For the VED not going through the DVLA will email you, and try to retake payment after 4 days. If that fails then they'll email you to tell you that the payment has failed and you're no longer taxed. So there'd be plenty of notice. For MOT you'd have your MOT certificate usually I would have thought, and same for insurance, they can just phone the insurer and check if you provide enough details.

I also have a reminder on my phone that goes off 5 weeks before, so I can book a Saturday test early, but it’s good to know that there is a fallback notice should I miss the pop up.

That’s alot of unlikely Ifs, all easily resolved at the roadside.I imported a JDM Legacy once, insured on VIN but forgot to update it with the reg number once it was registered.
Got pulled on ANPR for no insurance, showed them the certificate on my phone, apologised and updated the reg with the insurer. No dramas.
I’m happy the ANPR cameras are there. If they can catch some uninsured scum then great.

Then it's cleared up pretty quickly.This is one aspect of roads policing I can get fully behind and they should be doing a lot more of.
